RealOne is the devil...I hate programs that try to take over every single file association

Real is a lot worse than MS. I can design my own player to play WMV's and ASF's by using MS's components. Can I do the same with Real? NO!
Perhaps in this case but everything else Microsoft keeps safe with lock and key, unless you want to pay them $$ to see parts of their source code to see how certain protocols communicate with the OS. The is part of MS's new policy due to the antitrust suit, they will show parts of their source code to developers if you give them cash and sign your life away with their user agreement.

Microsoft is much worse.

Honestly I can't stand: Real, MS Media Player, Quicktime and yes even the latest version 3 of winamp has become bloated.

I'll never install Real. Period.

WHat's wrong with Quicktime besides the name?

Nahhh Quicktime is a small and calm little app, RealPlayer is the spyware-full, bloated, MS-like big bad player.

Anyways I just learned a new verb: "to dick". Interesting!

Same here. I have yet to hear anyone explain to me, in a persuasive way, why Real is SO hateful a product. Real One does really blow, but other than that I have never experienced any particularly nasty behavior by the Real Player, and I fail to see why people have such a Chicken Little level of paranoia toward it. Can someone give me a Top Ten list that tells me why I should exorcise Real from my PC and miss out on listening to Car Talk every week?

Alot of stock information is provided through Real Audio. So I've left it on my machine for a while. Don't really use it much. But a couple of days ago, I opened up a video file and it opened in Real player. I was like WTF. I checked the file associations in Windows and Real Player and no matter what I did, Real Player did not want to relenquish control of my files. It got me so mad that I uninstalled Real Player. I am never going back.

I'll bet, without exaggeration, that I have installed Real Player 12 times and and uninstalled it every time after I relearned my lesson.

I don't have it installed either. Very occassionally, I'll install it to watch one clip then immediately uninstall.

Huh? What do you mean? I don't see how MS being a worse company than Real applies at all. And how is anything anyone said hypocritical? ?????????????

most of the people complaining about Real in this thread are using windows. MS is FAR worse than Real, thus 'boycotting' Real, yet using MS Windows, is BLATANT hypocrisy.

anyways, it was just some flamebait to satisfy boredom. althought i meant it 100%, dont worry yourself over it i'm just some anonymous dumbass across the internet.

Actually, I have no moral or social objections to real player or realOne. I mean, real sets forth certain terms for you to use their software. It then becomes my choice whether or not I find those terms acceptable. Just like any other business interaction. I find, in general, that I have never needed RealPlayer simply because most of the real media is optimized to be streamed across the internet connection, and quality is sorely lacking. To take the britney spears example, I wouldn't watch it in Real format, not because I don't like real, but because it won't do me any good if she looks like a group of oversized caucasian pixels.

The very first version of Real was alright (not great, but alright) every version since then has installed two system tray icons including one blinking annoyingly, taken over every media format, and made many shortcuts and installed itself in system startup.

I don't touch it with a 10-foot pole. I'm a WMP 6.4 with codec man. WMP 7, 8, and upcoming 9 just try to take too much control. Just as WinAmp 3 has gone over the edge. I'll probably be using Winamp 2.80 and WMP 6.4 until a company that can acutally make a good product and no stupid unneeded extras steals my attention.

In all fairness, though, the tray icons and startup progs are easily disabled, and you can easily configure it on setup to only play RM files. You could easily levy similar complaints against MS Office.

The last time I used RealPlayer was sometime shortly before 7.0 came out. I finally got sick of the spyware and banner ads and bloat, so I got rid of it once and for all.

Also, for the record, I don't use M$ products either.

I don't use Real either. Like others, the earlier versions were fine, but the last few years I've been doing without it.
The quality isn't that great, anyway. Other than that, I try to avoid spyware products.

Real is horrible. I honestly hope they go out of business. Idiots. They don't realize that by alienating the techs of the world, they're cutting of their lifeline.
