Does anyone else find Windows 10 to be just plain ugly?

We have to look at this thing for hours, the least Microsoft could have done is make it pleasant. But the menus and apps, especially in the Control Panel, look like they were made by a first-year Photoshop student. Primative, basic, boring and bland. There is no artistry or pleasant aesthetic like there was in Win 7 or even Linux.

Haven't you heard? Minimalism is the trend du jour. OS X, iOS, and Windows are all on the bandwagon. It may be boring and bland, but at least it's not intrusive (which is why I can't stand most Linux distros).

This is totally a guess on my part, but if Win10 is the "last" version I could see 3rd party themes getting made for it to give more eye candy. Who knows, maybe even MS will release more themes for it in time.

I've been happy with the default Windows 7 look, and just dealt with Windows 8.1 on my laptop as I really didn't care much, but if/when I go Win10 on my desktop I'll likely be looking for something custom for it eventually.

I am thankful MS released Windows 8. It taught me to save money and never buy a new laptop, and I learned how to add and use Linux on my old laptops instead.

Stop the threadcrapping.

It looks a lot like the X-Windows graphical UI I used on Unix sparc machines back in the mid 90's. It works, but it is definitely ugly compared to other available options.

OS X is the same ugly. Windows 8 was unacceptable, and windows 10 is a slight bit better, but not by much. It is designed to run on minimal hardware. Vista was very pretty but needed 2GB ram and a dual core cpu to be enjoyed. Windows 10 runs better.

I used to work on those Sparcs back in the 90s it does have a bit of that Nextstep UI sense to it but I never thought of that till it was brought up

I liked Win 7's UI it looked modern.

I have yet to use it. However I would honestly just prefer an old school simplistic theme, maybe just solid color outlined icons. I know I won't care for the playschool tiles in the start menu.

I plan to just get the retail version and install it on my Macbook Pro. There's some things about OSX i just never liked. I don't like the dock, don't like how Finder will never remember it's size, I miss cut n paste and a few Windows only apps and games.

Main thing for me is I hope that Windows 10's trackpad gestures work as smoothly as it does on OSX. I like everything full screen and prefer to just three finger swipe between them. I can't find any reviews of W10 on a Macbook but guess I'll have to try n see.

I think 10 is even uglier than 8, MS put zero effort into aesthetics and if they did well face plant. Go to a Win7 machine and you'll think right away yea this looks quite nice.

I'm not sure why people talk about Aero. You can turn Aero off, and even switch to Classic XP look in 7. My netbooks came with Windows 7 Starter which didn't have Aero, and they still didn't look like flat children's blocks.

Its flat as its easier to run on a poky tablets. Flash is nothing but a distraction. I certainly prefer sparse and spare. I would be interested in a Win 2000 classic theme though. Mmmmm.

Totally agree with you, it feels like that Photoshop n00b just vomited colors all over the screen.

The moment you go back to Windows 7 you feel how lovely and pleasant it is to be back home

I really don't see what the big deal is.

I just upgraded my WIN 7 HTPC to WIN X and have been running it on the main rig instead of 8.1 months now.

You can personalize it you know.

The differences are minor and looks pretty similar once you learn to navigate it.

Is navigation your gripe more than looks ?

Does Windows 10 have High Contrast Mode (LShift-Alt-PrntScrn)? Would be interesting to see a screenshot of that. Here's how it looks in Windows 7:

Even in High Contrast Mode, the borders still exist so it doesn't look sloppy.

yes I don't mind the new icons, but the control panel and start menu is not intuitive at all. Most the time I have to think for a moment hmmm, is X setting in Control Panel or in PC Settings..... :whiste:

MS said they would listen to their clients when building Win 10, most people complained about the separation of settings between PC Settings and Control Panel so what did they do? separate them even more now it's not even funny....

just my 2 cents worth...

It does get some getting used to, but it's something you learn to navigate pretty fast actually.

I don't hate it, but it is a backward from 7, which is the best IMO. It least I don't have to "hover" over a mysterious area of the screen just to do able to do certain things (8).

They probably just made it to look cool on a tablet, only adding a junky start menu to stop the wining from 8.

If I can guess, MS is on a never-ending crusade to distance itself from the XP gui. It's default gui, in almost any color option, always looked childish. Vista got much better, and for a desktop they hit it with 7. But they think they can get the tablet market by making the desktop and laptop look and feel just one, so I am sure some SR down the road will make it even worse.

I guess since we are in an app (or 20) most of the time, it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things.

I like the thin edge borders in 10 along with the color schemes. What I don't like is the new windows update that will not tell you what it has done like the install history in 8.1. I also don't like the forced updates that they make you take. I have a feeling that it's a part of their making your pc part of their distribution cloud. If they can roll them out across the country then your pc will be able to send data packets to the next near pc that needs them speeding up software distribution without placing too much additional load on the MS server farms.

Yup bland and boring confirmed. Plus the layout of both those windows suck, difference is there is the option to view control panel as small/large icons rather than that annoying category view.
