out of my $4000 in monthly expenses, less than $100 of it is paid with cash according to my spreadsheet. that's less than 2.5%

i don't think i've gone to the ATM in half a year. my cash comes from paying for dinner by cc when eating out with friends, and everyone pays me cash.

everything else is cc (online) or check. even McD's takes cc now.

Credit Cards give rewards for buying stuff. What else could you want. I only pay cash at restaurants and for some low cost items.

95% debit card here. I still like to keep some cash on me though. I mainly use it at bars and restaurants (makes it easier to split the ticket).

I really don't ...I keep about 100.00 in my wallet just because I am in a smaller city and sometimes small biz here does not accept cc or dc. I will not do checks I hate checks!

I use cash occasionally, debit for small local purchases and groceries and credit for everything else. I prefer using debit or credit because I can track and categorize my expenditures in Microsoft Money a lot easier.

Check or autodebit or debit for mortgage, gas, water, and garbage/recycler bills.
Credit for remaining bills (electricity, phone, internet, usenet), and then credit everywhere except for places that don't take credit or some restaurants that I go to with co-workers for lunch.

It's a mix. I put whatever I can on my CC and pay it off every month to earn rewards points. I get a nice check for about $500 once a year.
I just wish I could figure out a simple way to put my rent on my credit card... that'd be an extra $250 check per year.

You're assuming that those using credit cards are not paying them off at the end of the month.

To play devils advocate, that's beside the point. Having a form of currency so readily available means you're more likely to overspend and ultimately going into debt. Before credit cards, if you didn't have the cash on hand, you didn't make the purchase. In today's world you're more likely to go into debt because that option is more available to you should you so choose to spend youself into oblivion.

You don't have to worry about your cc number getting stolen.

That's the keyword there, to put it into perspective we can say, most of us can't control our spending.

is there a bigger risk at restaurants as opposed to the supermarket, shopping mall?

Yes b/c most times, you stay at your table while they walk away with your cc where they can imprint or write down your info without you watching them. At a supermarket/mall, you either swipe it yourself or the cashier is swiping it in front of you.

I use a debit card for pretty much everything. And I've been really crippled lately because it was stolen and I've had to write checks and get cash from my bank's branch locations, and that's just really inconvenient. About half the places I go don't take checks.

Cash advance the credit card then pay for rent? Not sure what the interest rate on cash advance for you is though...might not be worth it.

I primarily use debit.

Cash gets used very rarely. I used it just last week for the first time in about 7 months.

I also use a check once a month to pay for rent.

And damn, $4k/month in expenses?
*sigh*.....I could only hope to ever even earn that much.
