Also known as aphthous ulcerations?
"The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown. In some cases they are thought to be caused by an overreaction by the body's own immune system. Factors that appear to provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies, and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid. Some drugs, such as nicorandil, have been linked with mouth ulcers."
"A common urban myth is that aphthous ulcers are directly connected to the onset of the herpes simplex virus. In reality, ulcers associated with herpes (or cold sores) are of an entirely different nature from mouth ulcers, which are not contagious."
My sisters and I have been suffering from canker sores since we were very young. Whenever I accidentally bite my lip or undergo a significant amount of stress, they flare up and I am in a significant amount of pain for at least two weeks. I usually only have one or two at a time, but they are big and painful. It has gotten to the point where they make my lips swell up if I get them on my inner lips, and I look like a fish! The ones that I get on my tongue are the worst, and makes eating extremely difficult and painful.
I also have TMJ and tend to "chomp" a lot at night, sometimes biting my lip or tongue in the process. THe mouth guards that I have tried don't work, as they either fall out or irritate my gums into developing more canker sores.
Does anyone suffer from canker sores as well, and if so what do you do to prevent them/treat them? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried salt water, which stings like heck but doesn't seem to help very much. Wiki offers a laundry list of suggestions, but I am curious about which work more effecitvely than others, if any.
