Does anyone else suffer from severe canker sores?

Also known as aphthous ulcerations?

"The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown. In some cases they are thought to be caused by an overreaction by the body's own immune system. Factors that appear to provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies, and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid. Some drugs, such as nicorandil, have been linked with mouth ulcers."

"A common urban myth is that aphthous ulcers are directly connected to the onset of the herpes simplex virus. In reality, ulcers associated with herpes (or cold sores) are of an entirely different nature from mouth ulcers, which are not contagious."

My sisters and I have been suffering from canker sores since we were very young. Whenever I accidentally bite my lip or undergo a significant amount of stress, they flare up and I am in a significant amount of pain for at least two weeks. I usually only have one or two at a time, but they are big and painful. It has gotten to the point where they make my lips swell up if I get them on my inner lips, and I look like a fish! The ones that I get on my tongue are the worst, and makes eating extremely difficult and painful.

I also have TMJ and tend to "chomp" a lot at night, sometimes biting my lip or tongue in the process. THe mouth guards that I have tried don't work, as they either fall out or irritate my gums into developing more canker sores.

Does anyone suffer from canker sores as well, and if so what do you do to prevent them/treat them? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried salt water, which stings like heck but doesn't seem to help very much. Wiki offers a laundry list of suggestions, but I am curious about which work more effecitvely than others, if any.

I have found that Ibruprofen gives me canker sores. Also, soon as you notice one begin to develop just swish (sp) around antacid (don't swallow it) after using hydrogen peroxide (again swish around). This has always immediately stopped their growth and quickened their healing for everyone in my family.

They do suck majorly

I also will not open your pictures up for obvious reasons

Hydrogen peroxide and antacid? What an interesting combination. I'll be sure to try that the next time, thank you. How long does it normally take for them to heal after that? Do you have any suggestions for what I might try once the canker sore is "full blown?"

Do you remember the type of zilactin, buck? I think there are 4-5 kinds available.

I used zilactin, it hurts like ALL HELL when putting it on, but it coats it with a layer of stuff that allows you to eat food without wincing. Keep in mind that you have to completely dry off the infected area ( i used qtips and TP) then put it on. This stuff helped me ALOT of times.....

Ill check now.
On another note, someone else said herpacin and abreva.... The ones i had were on the inside of my lip, those (herpacin/abreva/etc) were useless as your salava washed it away.

There is some evidence that sodium laureth sulfate can cause or exacerbate canker sores in vulnerable individuals. It's a common ingredient in toothpaste. You could try a toothpaste without it, and see if that helps at all.

I have one on the inside of my lower lip right now. I definitely don't want to try something that my saliva will wash away, and am hoping for a more dependable, fast-acting solution.

I will try zilactin-B, and will pick some up at the drugstore after work tomorrow. No continuous application? Looks good. I hope it helps, thank you!

I have never checked my toothpaste for such an ingredient before, I will do so tonight. Every little bit helps, thank you.

I must warn you again, when you apply it (it HAS TO BE DRY TO STAY ON for 6 hours), it will hurt alot. Im no sissy, but it brought tears to my eyes for the larger sores i had. However, the sting will last 3-5 seconds and the relief is instant. The pain goes away and if you applied it properly it will let you eat spaghetti and drink oj without any pain right away. This stuff was a life saver for me, I got sunburned quite a few times as a kid. Sunscreen is hard to keep applied to the lips.

How do you make it completely dry if it is inside of your naturally moist lip/tongue? Do you wait for it to dry out 100% by pulling it away from your gums for awhile?

It sounds very, very painful at first... but worth enduring if it will stop the pain almost instantly. I don't even look at salty foods (potato chips, etc.), citrus-sy foods (oranges, etc.), etc. when I have them. I look forward to purchasing it and trying it, thanks again for all your advice buck!

I get them very severely too. I noticed when I took some of those vitamins your article mentioned it seemed to get better. Whenever I get them, as soon as I cut my mouth, I will put a few grains of salt on the cut. Hurts fvcking horribly...but it works

I get them seldom, but I just dab my finger in some water, pour a little mound of salt on it, then apply and hold for 10 seconds or so.

Holy crap. :Q You would put salt directly onto the canker sore??

I fail to see how that would work, but if it did for you - kudos! I don't have the cajones to even think about trying something like that. *shudders*

Seriously, some of you kids must be hardcore masochists. Good grief!

I feel faint even thinking about those "treatments."

Another option is Debacterol. It's a mixture of sulfuric acid and various phenolics. Prescription only in the US, I think it is OTC in large parts of Europe.

It sounds barbaric; but, by all accounts, it eliminates pain in seconds with a single application, and speeds healing considerably. You may be able to get some from a Doctor or Dentist, particularly if you have a history of chronic canker sores. If you live in a place where it isn't prescription only(or are a wicked child) you could try Here

I just checked out that page and it sounds like zilactin. They both have that acid stuff (thats what burns at first) and it seals it. It also says to completly dry it first....

I use to get them A LOT before too. Like you, whenever I bit my lip or tongue, I knew a cankersore would be coming. This would last anywhere from a week to 2 weeks and would really suck because eating would be painful (if it was in the right spot) and brushing teeth would seem like some kind of torture treatment.

Recently, I've change a couple of my eating habits. Trying to eat less fried food and I went cold turkey on Coke and now just drink water. I also take Centrum Performance on a daily basis. Now I don't even remember the last time I had a cankersore.

does it just cover the spot (like wax) or does it also heal it more quickly?

Argh...I have a bad one on my lower lip right now too. I bit my lip last weekend...the swelling from that, combined with the fact that I chew a lot of gum and have razor sharp eye teeth led to me biting the area multiple times since then and making it much worse. I really need to get some zilactin. Right now all I have is pain relief gel which only lasts for a couple minutes until I start tonguing it...yes, I must be a masochist, I can't stop messing with it.
