Does anyone else think Win98SE is the worst OS ever?

Originally I used a mac at university - never knew what an illegal op was or a BSOD
1995 I am introduced to win 3.11 - no errors present - or BSOD's etc..
1996/7 I am introduced to Win 95 a few errors and the odd problem but generally good.
1998 I get Win 98 much to the dismay of some of my friends who think it sucks - it's fine for me - no real probs except for the odd illegal op and BSOD.
2000 I get Win98 SE - what a piece of cr@p - worst thing since "unsliced" bread! Illegal ops in IE5, Lock ups, Oh but you get ICS - well I don't use it
Thats my rant - any other opinions?
I'm sticking with it - don't want to re-format again

Don't know what the problem is, but Win98 works just fine for me. I don't get BSOD's. The only crash I've ever had was my own doing.

I've got Win98 SE and it performs illops all the time. I don't usually get BSODs but they're not unheard of. Personally I think it's the worst POS operating system I ever used.

Thank god i only use windows for gaming.

Oh and actually macs do crash oyu just get a unhappy mac logo that's all.

Yep I've had the power switch one too! Only way to stop is pull out the plug!

I have had no major problems with Win98SE. It about as stable as the 9x kernel can be with all that 16-bit code in it.

NT 4.0 is their most stable system, that's after you have SP6 installed. Everyone is saying 2k is stable, not so. You all must be NT newbies because 4.0 is way more stable than 2k.

For me its a toss up between 98, 98SE and ME.
NT is by far my fav for real work, and 2K is my fav for gaming.

Win98SE is certainly the worst M$ OS in the market.

1. It's from Micro$oft.
2. Win9x series is a dying family and Win98SE is the last member of it(WindMe has yet released)
3. It's buggy as hell.
4. ....

On 2 computers I am running WIN 98SE and no problems at all. One computer is running 16 hours a day with many programs being used. I have been running WIN 98SE since it was released.

The strange thing is I "tested" Win 98 Sucking Edition on another HD before I made the transition to my primary drive - it's only now after extended use I'm seeing the problems - I was warned - I even put up a post before I made the transition - people said it was bad - I didn't listen - boo hoo!
Whats the easiest way to get rid of Sucking Edition and get back to total stability (OK I'm exaggerating) of Win 98 Regular - other than "format C:"?
It's actually starting to bug me - I ran Norton 2000 tonight in the "hope" that I had a virus or two - unfortunately there were none!

I never likled W98 or 98SE, i have been running NT4 SP3-6 for 3 years, and switched to W2k a few days ago.... its ok...not more stable, but i like it ok. I am thinking of getting ME, but whats the point if i have W2k right?

SE works good for me, although I only use it about once a week ( the rest of the time I use win2k ). ME has just now replaced SE and seems just as good: very fast with "few" crashes. It's not perfect but it's good enough...

I've been running Win98 SE since it came out and I haven't had a single problem.

If you guys are getting bsod's in Win98 SE then the problem is most likely due to sloppy unorganized data management on your part. Most likely got tmp files spread all over the place, a registry full of crap, and every driver known to man installed several times over. No wonder your getting lockups.

But then there's always LitesStep and a variety of other shell replacements that can help those of you who find Win98 crash prone.

I was just wondering if anybody could help me out on a problem I have. My last installation of Win98 SE allowed me STRECTH, tile and centre my Background under Display Properties. After formatting, I only have two options : Tile and Centre.
Anyone have any clue as to how I can the Strecth option back?

Thanks!

Rudee - if only that was the case
I just formatted my HD a month ago and did a completely fresh install - only have the drivers I need for my hardware.
There is much less confusion on my HD than there ever was previously when I was running Win 98 Regular.
Seems to be a bit of a mixed bag Win 98 Sucking Edition?
Maybe the version is a problem - let me see what my build is...
4.10.2222A
What about you guys that have nice stable versions of Sucking Edition?

The argument that you shouldnt install lotsa drivers etc etc is really getting me a bit PO'ed.
WTF if I cant use the system, why even bother installing it?
Thats one really great OS, you can install it, but dont even think about updating the drivers, much less trying out programs, just sit and watch the system and everything will be fine.
Seems to me like either Win9x sucks, or its just way too hard for me to maintain, in either case, Solaris/Linux seems like more sensible choices to me since they're obviously easier, considdering they never crash on me.

Win98 is pretty lame in my opinion, at least compaired to NT or 2000. I have no personal depthful experience with linux so i couldn't comment on that.

Been running SE ever since it came out, totally uneventfully. Only conflicts appear to be mainboard related, occasional PCI-IRQ issues. The OS swallows what applications as well as hardware I have thrown at it without complaint, e.g. simultaneous video, sound, scanning, all while acting as server for my LAN connected to the net. In fact, I've been wondering this week why I installed Win2K...but then I remember I got the HOT kit and smile again.

I built my system and installed 98SE. In one month I had to reinstall 4 times (the format C: type). I posted the problems I was having (see my post: "Strange! Windows/system directory keeps being damaged."http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=185299)and got some good responses, but had tried them all. My last resort was to call M$. The only thing they told me to do that I hadn't was to turn off my bios virus protection. I've been running great since. (Knock on wood) How about everyone else that has had problems...Bios protection On? How about everyone that has had Luck......Bios protection Off? Im curious.
