I read a story about "#GymCreeps" a month or two ago. I decided to go see what it was all about. Wasn't at all impressed with what I saw. I find all the "shorts" on YouTube annoying too. Outside of a funny clip, a one minute or less clip isn't enough for anything. Also can't stand vertical video.

As far as GymCreeps, I know a lot of women have problems worth creeps at the gym, all the videos I saw were basically "look I setup the camera that shows half the gym in the background, then I edited the video to show this how this one guy looked at me 5 times in 30 minutes." (Just ignoring the fact that I was taking up the one squat rack the whole time, squatting 75 pounds.) I view stuff like that as completely counter productive to actually fixing the issues.

I have never used the TOK. Don't have the time nor the interest. I don't think the Chinese developed the tiktok to spy on kids, I think the Chinese developed tiktok to dumb-down kids. Shorten their attention span. Treat them like a dog where instant reward is the desire and patience they have no time for. I truly believe the Chinese developed tiktok so future generations of Americans will have no attention span and are totally unable to figure out ANYTHING on their own. Not unless presented in a 10 second video, with a clown act.

Been opening TikTok in a "Personal" browser tab so it couldn't sniff my cookies - but recently, when I do this in FF, all video controls fail to respond to clickage . . . so you just stare at a static thumbnail. Kind of a pointless site if you can't watch a video. Plus it won't populate the list of recommendations.

So . . .. as a test, I opened the same TikTok page in a normal browser tab, and the site functioned normally.

TikTok's video interface is HORRIBLE. Half the time I can't open videos if someone sends me a link. It's hit and miss, both on mobile and PC.

One thing I like on TikTok is that half the time I can right click a video (2nd click) and get a popup menu with "Save video as .. . " option. It's like, sometimes that Save option is disabled, and other times it isn't - if it is, I just retry the download some other time.
Kind of unpredictable, but eventually I get any video I want.

They can do both, spy, and use the algorithm to serve data in whatever way they feel most beneficial to them.

I wish browsers would just have a built in function to download videos off any site. I mean, it clearly was able to process the javascript and code and everything required to display it, so downloading it shouldn't really be that much different, even if it has to spin a thread and literally play and capture the video in some sort of background process or something. You can use tools like youtube-dl but the issue is they constantly need to be kept up to date to work so if your distro is not updating fast enough it's hit and miss if it will work on a particular day. Browsers on the other hand tend to have fast update cycles on most major distros.

If I do want to download a video I often find myself just doing a video capture.

In Chrome developer tools, I will go to the Network tab and start playing the video. Usually, it will show something there. I copy the URL from there (something starting with blob: and I remove that from the start of URL) and it is often an mp4 file that can be downloaded with Save as option.

lol oh no.....amazing
This is such a complex issue. If you ever used Tiktok it's actually a more wholesome version of Twitter (ahem X) that's video based and actually zeros in on content you want to see. A lot of the creators are very smart, educated, talented, funny, and helpful. The app is also well curated so hate, violence, nudity, etc doesn't last long before it's taken down.

On the other hand, the app seems to be stealing keywords left and right. I'll casually mention something in the car about some oddball subject and suddenly my feed is filled with videos about the subject. If the app is that sensitive, I could see how the CCP would use it for espionage.

It’s about the level of access to your device that it wants being more so than it needs.

Hm, I hear a lot about how LGBTQ+ folks have a hard time getting it to STOP showing them anti-LGBTQ+ content.

I don't ever post on Tik-Tok but I do watch a ton of videos on the app. Like Fritzo said above, there are some educated people that post interesting stuff on there that I like to watch. But yea, just like FB or Insta, it hears your conversations and feeds things it thinks you're interested in. Creepy...

Have never used it (or anything like it), never will.

As I read the news, this was a committee only. Not even close to passage. Yet.

Anyone who trusts TikTok *(read: the Chinese Government) on the same device that knows AND shares every sordid detail of your entire existence is ... erm .... well lets just say PT Barnum was right and one (at minimum!) IS in fact born every minute!

OBVIOUSLY a honey-trap is only effective if it's sweet so of course it would have to be entertaining/interesting to keep you watching.

In any case while viewing a TikTok linked video on your locked down PC might be okay, installing their app on your smartphone is foolish. (at best)

Edit: Just read the EULA for the mobile app... they tell you straight-up.

I can't imagine installing any social media app on my phone, they all spy on you like mad. Facebook is just as bad. Or just having stock android for that matter. It's Google. They are the king of spying. They can still spy on you via the web but with the phone they have access to way more, such as your voice and cameras and your contacts.

Never been near Tik Tok. Since the COVID lockdown though I've become quite a heavy user of YouTube (rarely used that site previously).

If I stop to think about it what makes me anxious are all those personal emails (years of them) stored in web-based email providers. I don't think any of them are based in China, though. I guess they are largely US-based corporations. But ultimately I guess I'm relying on the fact I'm so unimportant, insignificant, and obscure. Would be more worried if I were a politician, celebrity or some sort of dissident.

Absolutely .... however I trust Google one heck of a lot more than TikTok.
(which isn't saying a whole lot lol)
