I'd like to learn how to play and was wondering how I could start? I've never played before. . .Would a keyboard be better to start with? Do you guys know of any beginner techniques (books, lessons, etc..) ? ? ?

You can get yourself a few beginner books, and teach yourself to read the notes a bit, but I'd say get lessons. You'll enjoy the experience.
The only thing is practicing. You gotta practice a lot! I hated practicing but only because I have a very critical pianist grandma who made practicing hell on earth.
I say go for it

i'm 22 and i'm trying to learn to play. not to boast, but i'd say i have a knack for music. and i know how to read music. it's just a matter of reading it at speed and getting my fingers to do it but you know what the most frustrating thing about learning to play piano is for an adult? most of the material is written for 5 year olds! seriously, i do NoT want to practice "Mary had a little lamb" and "Pop goes the weasel!" or my favourite, "Rinky dinky parley vou." I need some good beginner books with good music.

*edit* it's Mary had a little lamb, not mary had a little lamp.

Yeah, I got lessons, started with a real piano. Re the practising, yeah, it's a pain. You really do need to practise a lot, or you wont get any better.

Should I learn how to read music first? I'm strapped for cash so I could probably buy a keyboard. But if you guys think a keyboard is a waste of time I won't do it. Regardless I'm gonna need to be able to read music right?

I have been taking lessons since i was 6 and i think it was alot easier to learn with a teacher... I think the hardest thing would be trying to learn on your own...but i am sure you could if you work really hard... The first thing you should do is get a decent teacher, then if you can get a real piano get one, but if you cant get a nice keyboard...

Reading the music is always the first step and a teacher will do that first thing, then you will begin theory and progress to actual music once you have mastered basic concepts...
