Does anyone here successfully use DMA with their IDE cdwriters?

Depends on the CDRWs some use it some don't.

Plextors do use DMA I believe, Yamahas do not. Those are the only two I know.

I added these two to two computers recently (Ricoh MP7083A & Ricoh MP7125A)

Both where set up as slave to the CDROM or DVD with DMA enabled no problems.

Yeah, my Plextor 8/4/32 hasn't burned a coaster (yet) with DMA enabled and I've had it for several months now.

Whitout DMA MP3 CPU usage huge and MP3 conversion is a problem sometimes.
Be carefull, if you have another device on the same channel: it must be DMA too.

Old 4x4x32 was fine with PIO.

In my consulting business, I make it a policy to enable DMA on for every drive on every system I sell or fix. As long as the correct chipset/busmaster drivers are installed, I don't see any reason NOT to enable DMA, given its significant improvements in processor load and drive performance. For IDE burners, this is even more important, because it makes them less susceptible to buffer underuns as the CPU need not take an active role in the data transfer.

If you still arent using it 5 years down the road, you got all your priorities wrong.

Ok great this basically eliminates the cd burner as a problem point. For whatever reason, I can burn a cd in PIO just fine, but when I enable DMA, it hangs in the middle of burns. Maybe because all my hard drives are connected to a fasttrak? I'm using win2k on a BX board, do I need to update the IDE drivers?

I have successfully uaed DMA with my HP 8250, my Ricoh 7060, my Plextor 12/10/32A, and my TDK 12/10/32. My parents each have an Iomega 12/10/32 (Plextor), both of which are running in DMA mode. Did you short the "reserved" jumper on the back of the Iomega drive? If not, do that and then try to run in DMA mode. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your mobo also.

My very very fine Mitsumi (although slow by todays standards) works just fine as Master on 2nd IDE channel of a BX board, with DMA enabled.

Great, thanks for the responses guys! They gave me the right pointers towards the problem. I found out that my writer DOES work with DMA on, but it won't work if you are burning from anything on fasttrak. Must be a weird driver issue.

My Plextor 16/10/40 work fine with DMA enabled.
