In my consulting business, I make it a policy to enable DMA on for every drive on every system I sell or fix. As long as the correct chipset/busmaster drivers are installed, I don't see any reason NOT to enable DMA, given its significant improvements in processor load and drive performance. For IDE burners, this is even more important, because it makes them less susceptible to buffer underuns as the CPU need not take an active role in the data transfer.
