There is plenty of talent out there today, I would argue more than at any time. However, as you said there is a ton of filler to go through as well.

Yeah, lots of good bands, you just need to find the gems in a greater heap of bands. And the good bands are not necessarily those with most exposure. Hence this thread were we can recommend the smaller bands.

Iron Maiden is still putting out excellent albums. That is the band that first got me into metal back in the day.

Years and years later I'm still finding stuff out about their songs. I recently learned "Where Eagles Dare" is a WW2 movie and I've never seen it

I also read or heard an interview with them. They always stayed pretty clean. Not too much drinking or drugs, claimed pot was the main drug and that dropped off quickly. Apparently roadies didn't think they were the best to tour with since there wasn't much debauchery going on back stage.

Same with me. I got into it probably in my late teens. Just saw them on their latest tour for the first time last year(I think?). Still put on a great show.

Watched Where Eagles Dare more than I can recall. Great Eastwood flick. Not much talking, but a lot of killing Nazis.

Most of the guys have been married for a while, Nicko is a born-again Christian, and Bruce seems to be involved in anything and everything, so it's no surprise not much debauchery was going on. Plus, Bruce and Steve have always been very serious about their craft.

The new Gorod album ("A Maze of Recycled Creeds") is pretty damned awesome (and available on most streaming sites I believe). If you liked the last one I recommend checking it out.

I just got tickets for "Book of Souls". I skipped the years when Bruce was not the lead singer. Best front man on stage today. A lot of their music lyrics come from books and movies. Somewhere in Time is my favorite cover. You really need the vinyl record to see everything on that one.

Album cover, mine is a tie between:
Live After Death

or

Power Slave

I used to have all of those album cover posters hanging in my bedroom. Those classic maiden albums had awesome artwork. Even the new ones aren't too shabby with the exception of Dance of Death. Could be the worst metal album cover in history (I like the album though, have it in my car's CD player for the drive home as a matter of fact).

powerslave is one of the best heavy metal albums ever made ..

anyway, back on topic, death metal has become .. not stagnant, but rather, over-refined. it's either endless hyper-technical solos, ridiculous time signatures, or guttural, incomprehensible growls. you won't find anything raw and visceral like Mallevus Maleficarvum or Realms Of Chaos being released anymore.

I think most would probably agree with you when talking about Iron Maiden. But I find myself liking "Piece of mind" better.

"Piece of mind" IM finally broke into the US. Powerslave was the record that made them into what they are today and the first record that the big five played on The same record. Nicko went on tour with IM on POM, but the other drummer recorded it.

I just went to the Book of Souls concert and it was amazing.
