That was a great Enter Sandman inspired riff, with terrible lyrics but man, Lars can still drum like a machine.

I still like a lot of things, I'll still pop on old Zep/Rush/Bowie/Sabbath etc now and then.

Depends on definitions sometimes I guess, Primus Sucks

Some of the newer "heavy/metal" stuff seems a bit uninspired, it's not like many people outside of a genre are usually pulling in huge numbers.

Music in general has gotten so dispersed in the media since the 50's/60's where people were salivating over an Artist release on vinyl it is a lot different. Taylor Swift seems to have gotten the pop scene down pat, good for her.

Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music[1] that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States.[2] With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock,[3] the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.[3]

The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence;[4][5] Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as "metalheads" or "headbangers".

Opeth has had me scratching my head for a couple albums now. I don't hate it, but I don't really like it. I loved Damnation too. Their more recent trend of prog rock just seems unoriginal. They were at their best and most original in the late 90s/Early 2000s.

New single from Metallica. I like it.

Has a thrash semi punk with less melody feel...i agree the lyrics are not great but they are still good and work with the feel of the song.

If this is indicative of how the whole album will sound, we will probably get a couple of gems on this album.

I still think this is the best album I have heard this year. You have to let this one build a little bit.

A triple danish recommendation of three very different recently released "metal" albums

Myrkur - Mausoleum
Not metal at all but:

a captivating live recording from the historic Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway. Aptly titled Mausoleum, the album features beautifully dramatic & stripped down acoustic reinventions of seven songs from 'M' plus one brand new song and a Bathory cover; all accompanied by the Norwegian Girls Choir and Håvard (ex-Ulver) on guitar. Captured in a cold, dimly lit tomb covered in morbid frescos that depict the circle of human life from conception til death, 'Mausoleum' is an incredible showcase of MYRKUR's sublime yet haunting voice in a truly chilling, unrivaled atmosphere.

Black Swamp Water - Chapter One
A band one of my colleagues sings in. It is more hard rock with a southern vibe to it, also have some nice heavy drums in it.

Dawn of Demise - The Suffering
They’re a Danish five-piece, no-fucking-around death metal band. They’re so fucking heavy, as in: slow, technical, ice cold, evil, and fucking brutal. They’re not trying to (re)invent anything, they just master everything, and their only goal is to mow you down and crush your face with their sound.

"Debut release on Via Nocturna Records. Sludgy, doom, stoner psych-metal from Los Angeles. Greasy riffs and words you hope aren't about your life."

Sure. As long as there as children too old for the Wiggles and too young for real music there will always be metal.

Huldre
Really good folk metal, originally playing folk music, then turning to the dark side. Their last album won the award of best metal album in Denmark 2016. Female lead singer which reminds me a bit of early Nightwish, all lyrics are in Danish though, which might not be for everyone.
