I'd disagree with that statement. I hate bands that spew profanities every other verse. It just shows a lack of creativity, in my eyes. Listen to Opeth; it's like poetry.
I see what you're saying -- I should elaborate. Lyrics do matter, and good lyrics aren't a bad thing. But not too important to me. But it does help when it's not just profanities senseless junk. I like a good guttural vocalist, and he/she could be singing about baking cakes for all I care, as long as it fits the music.
One of my friends is so into Opeth, it's made it almost impossible for me to ever listen to them. Constantly compares everything to Opeth -- I get so sick of hearing it from him sometimes. I've tried to listen to them, but their hardcore fans remind me hardcore Tool fans. That, and I've just never enjoyed their music much at all. I've listened to tons of metal over the years, so I've given them their fair chance. I just can't get into them. But hey, as long as other people dig em, :thumbsup:
