Does anyone listen to heavy metal/death metal anymore?

I'd disagree with that statement. I hate bands that spew profanities every other verse. It just shows a lack of creativity, in my eyes. Listen to Opeth; it's like poetry.

I see what you're saying -- I should elaborate. Lyrics do matter, and good lyrics aren't a bad thing. But not too important to me. But it does help when it's not just profanities senseless junk. I like a good guttural vocalist, and he/she could be singing about baking cakes for all I care, as long as it fits the music.

One of my friends is so into Opeth, it's made it almost impossible for me to ever listen to them. Constantly compares everything to Opeth -- I get so sick of hearing it from him sometimes. I've tried to listen to them, but their hardcore fans remind me hardcore Tool fans. That, and I've just never enjoyed their music much at all. I've listened to tons of metal over the years, so I've given them their fair chance. I just can't get into them. But hey, as long as other people dig em, :thumbsup:

Always have to give a nod to Veil of Maya whenever I'm asked for metal/death metal recommendations. Metalcore/deathcore mixed with some awesome, slamming, polyrhythmic groove.

Because I haven't seen a recommendation yet, Protest the Hero is a very talented metalcore band, with a sortof throwback 80's sound.

Their newest album was a huge, positive surprise for me. The throwback 80's element is very prominent, some of the stuff almost being power/thrash, just in a really technical form. If they're still considered metalcore, they're easily my favorite of the genre.

Svnla i think that the bands you've listed have almost been relegated to "classic rock" status, no longer metal, lol.

There is a ton of good metal out there and always has, it just isn't mainstream like Metallica in the 80's and early 90's. If you want to get "into" metal, do it the way all true fans did, start with the big 4: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer.

If you don't know what you like, honestly turn on the Heavy Metal station on your Fios or whatever you have. I have found (surprisingly) that they'll give air time to some really good metal bands (as well as terrible metal bands). But it's a good spread of "metal" so write down what you like when you hear it and look into them further on Youtube.

My favorites as of late have been Amon Amarth, Meshuggah, and Opeth, although I've been listening to metal since middle school in the early 90's.

And just for kicks, give Yngwie Malmsteen a whirl. By and large the people who know Yngwie fall into one of two camps: those that love him and those that despise him. See where you fit!

But like most things, your tastes will progress, and stuff I liked when I was 20, I can't listen to anymore, and vice versa.

*edit* because I have to add it, every metal thread needs a Yngwie clip. This is classic YJM, it's what he does better than anyone else.
