NJ is super crappy along the turnpike in the Newark/Elizabeth/Jersey City area, especially where the oil refineries are. unfortunately, that's the only part of the state that 99% of out-of-towners ever see, given that their only time spent in the state is driving down the I95 corridor or in a cab going from Newark airport to NYC.

outside of that area, and Camden/Trenton/Atlantic City, most of the state is pretty nice. it varies widely from urban areas like Hoboken/Jersey City to farm country in central/southern Jersey.

pretty much. I live in Northern NJ. Within an hour I can be hiking the Appalachian trail in Western NJ at the beautiful Delaware Water Gap and all the amazingly beautiful state parks around there. North less than an hour and there are other nice NJ state parks, a bit over an hour and I am hiking in the amazing NY State Park of Harriman State Park and a bit farther north , in the Catskills. SouthEast I can go to some nice beaches, the ones that cater to families and chill people not the party animal joints like Seaside Heights. I can go east and be in the amazing cultural mecca that is NYC. Personally I think Jersey City is one of the most amazing places to live as well, besides a couple parts - very diverse, quick access to NYC, arts, great food, nightlife, etc.... Not a big fan of Hoboken - even though Hoboken is probably nicer than most of the places people that talk shit about NJ live. I hear people from nowhere Middle America say Jersey is a shithole. They have nothing but shit to go to an hour in any direction so I find it amusing really. Hey maybe seeing shit like the worlds biggest ball of yarn is really fucking life-fulfilling.

It's not anywhere near that simple. That's equivalent to saying you would always be better off eating at the cheapest restaurant. I've lived in quite a few states that were cheaper than NJ, i.e. Indiana, Maryland, Rhode Island. I wouldn't trade NJ for any of them. You can live cheaper in just about any southern state... but then you would have to live in a southern state. There are states I would trade New Jersey for, but not surprisingly the cost of living is high in all of them.

I am basing it of this article I read the other day

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money...all-st-tax-friendly-states-business/18651825/

but I do take taxation and cost of living into account more than most considering that they were some of the main reasons I left California for Texas.
