Does anyone on here own a Kindle 2?

If you email to have a PDF converted, is that some sort of automated process? Do you get the converted PDF's instantly? If it's not instant then about how long does it usually take?

Do those converted PDF's get stored in your account? Can you do the wireless sync with those PDF's and read them on you iPhone using the Kindle app?

Can I use some 3rd party app like say Stanza and convert files to the Amazon Kindle format and then put them onto my Kindle manually via a SD card but then have it upload via the Kindle to my account and have it accessible from something like the Kindle app in the iPhone?

Do you regret getting the Kindle 2 versus something like the Sony PRS-505?

I know, random questions...

But I'm hoping someone can answer them before I pull the trigger on it.

EDIT1:

Well I answered two of my initial questions on my own already.

It no longer comes with a cover or wall charger, that sucks.

So beyond that now I'm hoping to figure out about all this PDF conversion crap.

I cannot believe this thing doesn't have the ability to expand it's storage via SD or something like that.

I'm starting to wonder if it's really worth the extra cost over the Sony PRS-505...

90% of what I read will be ebooks I already have and not books I'd buy direct from Amazon, I might on rare occasions purchase books directly from Amazon though but I'm not sold that it's worth getting this just to have that option.

One of the huge selling points is that it can keep my reading progress in sync with the iPhone app, which is something I'd get a ton of use out of, but if that won't work with my own ebooks I already own then again I'm not sure it's worth spending the extra money on.

EDIT2:
Well I pulled the trigger on the Sony PRS-505.

$269 versus $359 (Kindle 2) and it does more specifically what I'm looking for.

Now it's the waiting game of how long will it take J&R (Amazon reseller) this time to actually ship my item.

I don't have a kindle 2 (or a kindle1), but the Kindle 2 doesn't have an SD card slot, so no dice on that.

This is something I'm waiting another year or two on, for competition to step up and prices to come down (and for highly and/or easily hackable products to come out.)

Keep the 505, I say, I broke my Kindle 2 within 2 weeks. Got a refund, and now I'm pondering about the 505 or 700.

Play with both if you do decide to go that route.

The 700's screen looks way to washed out for my taste.

But some people are OK with that.

I'd like to know about the pdf conversion and syncing progress in pdfs up with an iphone as well. I have an iphone and my fiancee is getting me a kindle 2 for a wedding present.

EDIT: I also dislike the lack of SD card slot, but 2gb holds a lot of books and if I can pull down my converted books on the fly, I wouldn't complain.

PDF conversion doesn't look pretty is all I can say. If it's just straight text, it's acceptable. Once you start looking at tables or diagrams and things like that the formatting becomes pretty atrocious.

Don't have a Kindle, but I have a PRS-505. Love it. The battery lasts forever, the screen is great, I can drop in SD cards or memory stick, and, IMO, the UI is superior to the Kindle. I haven't looked at the PRS-700 in person, but the photos I've seen only make the screen appear washed out when using the LED front-light. It may be different in person though.

Go with the PRS-505 or 700, you won't regret it.

I have a Kindle 2, but have not had anything converted yet, so I can't comment on any of that. I love the thing, and so does my wife. I like the free lifetime wireless 3G and the physical keyboard, those are two reasons I chose the Kindle over the Sony readers.

If you're going to read mainly your own e-books, it might be worth it to you to simply get a Sony or something else that will support those natively and not have to go through a blind conversion process where you have no say-so over formatting issues.

Part of what I love about my K2 is its ability to access the internet on the fly. Wikipedia, Google, email, etc.. Also being able to browse amazon.com's growing selection of ebooks is a very nice plus.

so the K2 gives you lifetime 3g, if I was to buy one I could use it for an email and wiki on the go forever, for free? That sounds awesome to me. a big screen + keyboard is a winner to me. I think I know what I'll be buying this summer.

Yep, pretty much. Until Amazon or Sprint goes out of business, anyway.

I have a 505. I love it. They released a firmware recently that pretty much fixed all my pdf issues. I read technical books on it mostly. The tables and pictures can get rough sometimes is my only negative.

There's a freeware app called Calibre that I use to organize & convert my books for my 505.. it's pretty cool.

I was reading about that on the mobileread forums.

Looks like a nice app.

Plus I have Acrobat Pro so I can pretty easily convert most of my PDF's to something else.

J&R is absolutely my favorite B&M here in NY. Their shipping is fantastic (even offer same day shipping for $20 in NYC) and I have never had a problem with them.

I know it's late for you, but...

The conversion process for .doc, .pdf, .html, .jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp is completely automatic when sent to Amazon to be converted.

Conversion can take up to a few hours. Probably best to send them before bed and let them deliver the next morning. Not all .pdf files will convert. Some are too complicated for Kindle to be able to read, so the conversion is not completed in those cases.

Personal documents sent away for conversion are not stored because they are not orders. When a pe3rson gets them back, it would be smart to store them on your PC or a flash drive somewhere. Converted docs cannot be synced across multiple devices using Whispernet.

However you get files into a native supported format is up to you. .axw, .txt, unprotected .mobi and .prc are native formats.

Enjoy the Sony.

Edit: It does with a wall charger, but no cover.

Included Accessories: Power adapter, USB 2.0 cable, rechargeable battery. Book cover sold separately.
