The metal door underneath the plastic skid is strong and complete. A forklift driving into the side of a saturn will NOT puncture the interior (ask me how I know )

Gigglegirl, a few things you will need to watch out for:
-oil consumption, check at least every 500 miles
-cylinder head cracking on S*1's (SOHC motors)
-hard transmission shifting into reverse; a pair of nuts in the transmission are known to loosen on some trannies and should be repaired ASAP if you get that
-ignition coil packs are a common source of ignition trouble

Cheap to fix and easy to work on are it's best attributes, as well as getting pretty decent mileage and not having to worry about dents.

Good call on getting an S-series.
I bought my first one a few years ago and I've moved onto my 2nd.

Cheap cars that are good on gas, easy to fix, and relatively fun to drive (DOHC,5MT)

I love my 96 SL2. I paid $800 for it. Drive it 700km per week.

Be sure to go to saturnfans.com forums for any advice. That is a ridiculous wealth of knowledge over there.

the oil light is usually never for oil level, it's for pressue. Usually on any car by the time you see the oil pressure light, it's too late.

The worst car I ever drove was a mid 90's saturn. I could hardly believe how terrible that thing was. The car you're asking about, though, not sure. I think you can do better, though. Get a nissan sentra.

Crazy, I love my 96.
- It's comfortable, rides well, handles well... has every feature if not more, any other car in its class would have.
- Cheap, good on gas, easy to repair..
I'm not sure what's not to like, unless you drove a single overhead cam automatic that had been beat or something. They are 85HP pre-1995. (100hp post-95)

i drove a 1997 Saturn SC-1 from 1998 to 2008 , got it with 10k miles, it died from a blown head gasket at about 180k miles

never had a major repair during that time, had to replace the alternator and water pump (tires/battery)

My domain 30moons.com is based on Saturn's moons. I was highly active in the late 90's on Saturnalia, SaturnFans, SaturnSpot, etc. It was a fun car.
