Oh, just don't mention you play Monopoly there. Or Cranium. DEFINATLEY not Cranium. Or Scrabble or Boggle or Risk (that's another 'DEFINATELY NOT'). Pictionary, Outburst, Parcheesi, Sorry, etc.

Settlers is good, actually!

All those 'not' games are generally considered entry level "kids" games there.

Think about the reaction techies have if someone is going on about how awesome their new "Intel" PC is and how much better "Intel" is over AMD when it turns out they just plopped down a grand for a Celeron 1.4ghz system or so and you've got an Athlon64. Kinda the same thing. 'Monopoly', 'Risk', 'Cranium', etc are considered technically boargames, but boardgames for people who don't really know anything.

From my profile over there, you can see that I'm something of a wargamer. Which is another niche within the hobby entirely.

but one weekend, a few friends and i discovered this cool game "apples to apples"

kept us really busy, and is super funny

I used to play Squad Leader, Axis & Allies and Advanced Civilization, when I had the time. Nowadays, I don't know anyone who plays them. I'd love to start up again, especially Squad Leader.

I was going to mention that game, but I didn't think anyone had ever heard of it. That game is tons of fun.

That's the "Settles" mentioned earlier in the thread by a couple people.

It's generally considered a good entry level game in the "German Game" or "Eurogame" genre. (FWIW, there are two main types of 'board games' - Eurogames and Wargames. To contrast - Monopoly, Risk, etc are rightly placed in Toys'R Us as they essentially amount to just toys. Not a pale flicker of the amount of strategy needed for even basic Eurogames. It's like comparing "Deer Hunter" to "Half Life 2". Yes, they are both technically 'games', yes you play both on the PC, and yes both are about shooting things....but to call them the 'same thing' because all you've even played is "Deer Hunter" and that's good enough for you.....is almost criminal!)

If you check out the Geeklists on BGG, you'll find a couple dedicated to good started 'Eurogames', although, to be fair, they aren't really my thing. As noted, I'm a wargamer.

Anyway, the list Best Boardgames Ever is as good as any to start from.

One time I went to a friend's house and all they had was some Christian board game. It was like living next to the Flanderseses.

I really like Cranium, Upwords, Scattegories, and that game where you draw stuff.
