Does Apple Xserve G4 or G5 have built-in RAID 1?

how do I turn it on?

Basically there's 1 internal disk and I want to add a second identical internal disk to be a RAID 1 mirror.

I don't care whether it's hardware RAID or software RAID, I just want a mirror disk without regards to performance.



...I asked about G4 AND G5 Xserve because I don't know which one it is...this is something I am going to do for someone else's Xserve and I just want to go in and do it all in one trip.

Its software raid. You configure it in Disk Utility.

Xserve and G5 towers (and maybe even G4 towers?) can do software RAID. You can even boot from the software RAID.

Although what I have seen far more common in a production environment is a fibrechannel card in the G5 Tower or Xserve connected to the "Xserve RAID" which is Apple's external hardware RAID box. Sometimes people even connect several computers and one or more RAID boxes to a fibrechannel switch so that each computer can access the data directly over the "SAN" rather than having to use a fileserver over a much slower ethernet network. (Gigabit fibrechannel is faster for real world usage than Gigabit ethernet... and 2gbit and 4gbit fibrechannel is even better)
