Ugh, I hate it. I know fruit cake is big in the UK around Christmas. Every year for Christmas my wife's English grandma used to send us a fruitcake covered in marzipan. You couldn't chip this fucking thing with an axe. So gross. She stopped sending them recently though, which kinda sucks because we recently have had need of a doorstop.

Yes! So damn delicious. My mom makes it every year and ices it with marzipan and royal icing. So rich and tasty. My sister never liked it though - guess that's because she was born here in the US.

My GF is Peruvian and they eat panettone. It's tasty, but not nearly as good as what my mom makes.

My dad and I like them. This Christmas my mom made one from scratch -- even candied the fruit herself -- and it was awesome.

Its candied fruit. The red is probably something similar to maraschino cherry and the green is most likely candied citron or lime peel. Its excellent, don't knock it until u try it!

I loath maraschino cherries and green whatever the shit is. Its fucking nasty. They should try using real fruit and not ultra processed scraps.

Its not really ultra processed in the sense of junk food etc... Its actual fruit soaked in enough sugar to dry and preserve it. Pretty sure the water content in fresh fruit would be not contribute to a good cake, hence the candying process.

I don't eat it often but I find it tasty when I do. I never really understood the bad reputation fruitcake has. It doesn't taste any worse than most other cakeish things I've consumed.

I'm a fan. I got one for Xmas(again), and it was made by some company down south that's famous for them(so it says on the label), and I enjoy it very much. I've only had a couple bad ones in my life, usually due to excessive drying.

Was it Collins Street Bakery in Texas?
I'm not a fan of store bought fruit cake but got one this year from this place. It was really good. Toast it up a bit and throw on some whipped cream, good stuff.

I don't get how cartoons portray fruit cake as bricks

For personal use, the batter is put in bread pad half full.
When baked, it is the size /shape of a brick.

Then you wrap it up in a cheesecloth soaked in liquor/wine.
Wrap that package up in foil and stick in in a dark location for a year.

Next year, make another batch and eat the first batch.

The store bought stuff is not usually aged and/or liquored.

I like fruit cake.

A couple slices, slightly warmed with a bit of butter spread on them and with something warm to drink, all on a cold winter's night.

that's good eats.

You butter your cake? Are you sure you're not just an American living in a Canadian body? :hmm:

Proper home-made fruit cake is pretty good, but troublingly fattening. Agree with Welshbloke about nasty pre-made ones - all the calories with none of the pleasure.

Picked up a fruitcake from Costco this Christmas and it was delicious. Not sure why people don't like them. The one from Costco have candied cherries (red and green) and a bunch of nuts. All held together with a little bit of flour. It's quite delicious.

Why do they do that? (dye cherries green that is)
