Does Chipper Jones have any chance whatsoever to bat over .400 this year?

Um....Ted Williams was simply the last person to hit 400 - that's not the single-season record or anything like that. It's actually only the 19th highest single-season average. Tony Gwynn and George Brett came pretty close - I would say it's unlikely, but not impossible, that someone could hit over 400 again.

He does hold the record with an 84 consecutive games on base - but plenty of people have been over 50, so I'm going to say that one could get broken

502 plate appearances. if a player is in the running for a batting title though and falls just short of the 502, the difference is deducted and is counted as non-hits and they could still win the batting title. for example, in 1996 gwynn had 498 plate appearances (451 at bats + 39 walks + 1 hit by pitch + 7 sacrifices) and since he was 4 short of the 502 they counted 4 more at bats and made them non-hits and his batting average was still the best in the national league and thats how he won the batting title.

the number of 502 comes from the rulebook that states a player should average around 3.1 at bats a game. so 3.1 x 162 = 502.2. unless that players team got perfect games picthed against them for the entire season and never make up that .1 every game.

3.1 plate appearances per team game.. The Braves have played 70 games, so it's 217 right now. 502 for a full 162 game season. Chipper has 279 plate appearances, currently.

At his current rate of 4 plate appearances per team game, he'd have to play another 55 games to qualify for the batting title, but he could hang up the cleats some time in August.

I don't think he's fully healed from the torn quad. He's been in a major slump since coming back.

.400 is so tough because even a 1 for 3 night drops your average. I know that might sound obvious, but it drives home the point of how hard hitting .400 is.
