Does fail2ban start automatically each time system starts?

I've just installed Fail2ban on Ubuntu 14.04 and there's something I want to ask: Does fail2ban start automatically each time system starts? I think so, but just want to make sure, since I've read somewhere online that one should use chkconfig command to autostart fail2ban (not like Ubuntu has this command anyhow)...

Fail2ban should start automatically, you can check if it's running with

Code:
ps -e | grep fail2ban

or

Code:
service fail2ban status

Just to be clear, you're running on Ubuntu 14.04 Server, right? Fail2Ban uses iptables firewall, and it's usually not a great idea to be using things like NetworkManager alongside tools like iptables.

Thanks for your reply!
The question is solved. Fail2ban does start automatically.
To answer your question... As strange as it sounds, I've got a Desktop edition (with Unity).

I think it's not a great idea to run NetworkManager alongside any other network configuration tools like iptables. But best luck.

Maybe... I can't tell you off the top of my head. I used to have issues with it when I was setting up BIND9. I think it interfered with me changing resolv.conf file, so I can use my own DNS server...
Is there an easy way to know if Network Manager is present?

If you didn't specifically remove it, it is installed and running by default. You can check if it's running with

Code:
service network-manager status
There is also a little applet in the upper right hand corner of the screen (at least on unity, or gnome3) that looks like either a wifi-icon, or a LAN icon, if that is present then NetworkManager is running.

I got this reply in the terminal when I ran your command:

Code:
status: Unknown job: network-manager
I do have Wi-Fi icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Actually, Network Manager does appear in System Monitor too...

Sorry, that's my mistake, NetworkManager isn't a service.

If you see that wifi icon on unity or gnome3, it is running.

I'm not familiar with Ubuntu, so got curious ...

Apparently the 14.04 uses "Upstart" to configure, start and stop service.
https://www.digitalocean.com/commun...art-event-system-what-it-is-and-how-to-use-it

That link does not tell whether the command "service" has other options. Perhaps it could be used to list installed/enabled/disabled services?

The link does hint that /etc/init/*.conf are important files for the services. Fail2ban, NetworkManager, etc ought to have something there.

What is the package manager in Ubuntu? apt? Can it search for strings, like NetworkManager, list installed packages, list files belonging to a package, etc? I would use such commands (if they exists) to learn about my system.

In /etc/init directory we just have Upstart daemons conf files. Fail2ban isn't there, 'cos it's using the older System V init system. It's in /etc/init.d folder
No Network Manager there. It's in /etc/init directory, 'cos it uses Upstart.

We've got this command for System V services:
service --status-all
For Upstart we've got this one:
initctl list

I always use apt-get. I personally don't search, I just input something I know of, but if you care to learn about it, then you can read here:

Hey

You can check it with the command:

Code:
service fail2ban status

It should install as a service by itself so far I can remember.
