Oh, you're one of those people. Kindly do us all a favor and save it.
You're comments are pretty fucking worthless. So why don't you save it. You represent one opinion from a big city such as Chicago and think traffic is some of the worst the country. Your example? The i4 traffic from Tampa to Orlando, which, during the time you were down here, was undergoing the largest road construction job in the state to date. Shut up.
The only thing you've stated that has any merit was "Florida has different climates and different attitudes". The rest is all your isolated experience.
Just like the U.S. is made up of tons of different types of people, communities, environments, and experiences, so is Florida. You'll need to get more specific for us if you want better details. I live in Pinellas County and have spent a considerable amount of time in many other cities and towns including Orlando, Jacksonville, Ft Lauderdale, and Gainesville. Each of them are different in many ways. That being said, give us a better idea of where you are at and we'll get specific.
So far the generalities of Florida have been stated:
- Florida does have hurricanes. This is an issue when it comes to home owners, their insurance rates, and the overall safety of people living in Florida in general. Nowhere in Florida is safe when it comes to hurricanes. Granted, they have hit land on the Atlantic side more than the Gulf side. But recent history has had a few good sized hurricanes travel aright around the state and into the Gulf side. Just keep this in mind.
- Taxes can be very different compared to other states. You might want to look into it and know what's up before you head down here.
- Humidity can be an issue. As a Florida native I don't mind it one bit. It sounds like you'll be working indoors anyway. But people that aren't from Florida don't seem to like it and its at the top of the complaint list.
- Some say traffic is bad. I can't say that this is true throughout the entire state. I also think it depends on what traffic you consider bad. I have noticed on my commutes that people rarely pay attention to the driving ettiquette ( passing on the left lane only, etc. ). But as long as the flow is nice then I'm happy. Getting stuck in rush hour is what I consider bad. I work 8:30 to 5:30 in and out of Tampa and I don't get caught in rush hour so again, it depends on where you are. There are smaller cities and towns all over the state that have never even experienced a rush hour.
There are pros to living here, lots of them. And the cons that are above, save the hurricanes, are squashed by the awesome experiences and activities here in the state. I'm not talking about the theme parks, although you've got more than a dozen to choose from. I'm talking about things that only the state has to offer:
1. We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And as a plus, you can either live on the side where the sun rises at the edge of the water or where the sun sets. There is surf on the Atlantic side.
2. The food is amazing, especially Seafood. We have big enough cities to bring in some of the greatest chefs from all over the place. The seafood is some of the freshest as we have our own variety of fish and shelfish down here and it doesn't need to travel more then a day to get to our stores. I'm lucky enough to live right next to Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg where there are a few local fish stores that have daily catches that you can pick up after noon. This isn't everywhere, but you can definitely find good seafood no matter where you are in the state.
3. Sports is a plus for some. We have professional teams all over the state, two hockey teams, two MLB teams, and three NFL teams. In respect to baseball, we have more farm leagues and spring training complexes then anywhere else in the US. There is always something going on that's sports related. The sports season generates a ton of revenue for us. And I'm sure you've heard about how many golf courses we have.
There are others. I'll wait for more responses from some.
The bottom line is: Don't base one person's opinion of FL when they have only experienced some of the area. I live literally three blocks from the bay and can't remember the last time I've gotten a mosquito bite (but I've had plenty before). Its all subjective.
