Alas, I fear we still believe in God because we still believe in grammar

I agree. I was raised to believe in a god, but during junior high I started thinking and questioning things alot. At first I was scared to not believe in god (maybe I'll get struck by lightning for being a heathen!), but finally I decided it just didn't make sense, and I've been that way ever since. I have learned alot about the reasons behind religion since then, and it simply seems ridiculous to buy into any of them.

And I suppose it was those still lingering questions that brought you to keep thinking. For I?m sure those "reasons behind religion" haven?t all been answered. Maybe we should redefine our definition of what religion is before we say it is simply ridiculous.

I mean religion as it is commonly used, e.g. Christianty, Judaism, Islamicism(sp?), Native American beliefs, African tribal / voodoo / whatever.

For I?m sure those "reasons behind religion" haven?t all been answered.

Nor will they ever be. There are no answers, there are only more questions (no, I'm not being cheesy, and yes, I really mean that/believe that)

What I don't like is people making a decision as to what they believe, based on small thinking and bad information.

Damn straight
science > religion

Remember, people created "God" because they couldn't explain things.

Does God exist to you

i don't know and i don't care. i'm scared of death just like anyone else, but that doesn't mean i'm going to invent paradigms that allow me to live forever, i know better than that. i would like nothing better than for my existance to be endless, but my experiences so far teach me it's just not going to happen. so, until i find proof of the contrary, i'll assume that this life is all i have and try to make the best of it.

Do microscopic hordes of blue smurfs that camp on the North Pole exist to you?

Try to prove they don't exist! I dare you!

YES.

I can't prove the existance or demonstrate any miracles beyond those of everyday humans and their achievements. The whole concept of faith implies the believing without doubt and therefore no evidence is needed. If I said faith in my significant other, that means I'm not perpetually suspicious of them, I completely trust them. Faith isn't something a person just gets or decides to have. Most go through life without gaining pure faith ever. (My beliefs about faith ->Kierkegaard). Its the big unknown. The world is infinite (the superlative of superlatives) and believing in God doesn't mean I know the answers to any questions. Saying that I know whats going on in this world and the meaning of life is putting myself on the same scale as God, or whatever supreme-ness you think exists in the world.

People should be free to believe what they want to believe. I don't expect to convince anyone of God, nor do I have the desire to do so. To me, its a personal relationship. If a person wants to find God, read the bible, study, and figure it out for yourself. If my beliefs are strong enough, I'll patiently listen to your opinion, thank you for it, and take it into account with regards to what I believe.

Science is not greater than religion. In fact, science was endorsed by religion as a means of getting us closer to God, an I truley believe it still is. Science and Religion in my book are very similar while neither is greater than the other. I believe in God, but not what you would call a christian god. Basically God is the unknown to me, and I'm ok with that.

I have never seen god
I have never heard god
god has never done anything for me
there is no absolute proof that a god exists
most things that people used to attribute to god at one time or another have been explained by science. However as science progresses, there are more questions .... and there will always be questions we dont know answers to.

Since I have never heard or seen or felt any iny presence or heard of anything that this so called god has done ... I would have to say that i do not think god exists. However I am not omniscient, so I do not know for sure.

That's well said, my thoughts on the matter exactly.

I would like to reserve a "yes" for God, but I don't practice any religion.

You got that wrong. The Universe "banged" by polarizing spacetime into a sub-particle which initiated a cascading time frame effect, and the incredible amount of energy which equalizes to zero further polarized itself by expanding into 2 different directions along a planar axis and then forming the other particles through a complex chain reaction of expansions and contractions. Why did this happen? Theory has it that spacetime is a cycle that repeats itself when the universe dies of heat death and contracts back to a single state.

But God existing out of nothing? Impossible!

And life forms started as a pre-cell membrane that formed in a pool of amino acid type molecues which had the proper amounts of compounds, pressure, and electrical charges (lightening) to create an RNA sequence capable of replicating itself. This self-replication instigated a multiplication of pre-organisms that were very unstable and kept altering their RNA per replication, creating a accelerated evolution into stable organisms. As organisms divided, consumed, and died, mutations occured in the genetic makeup which caused changes in metabolism and structure which could benefit the organism. Over milliions of years, complex chemical reactions and nervous systems became the basis of intelligence. Millions of more years human evolution split off from a pre-ape like creature that had the right circumstances to make variations in speech, and thus language was born. Language then solidified intelligence into a self-progressing medium. Art, Spirituality, Science... computers capable of making decisions... life keeps evolving... we become more efficient at controlling the environment around us, as in genetics and chemistry... learning how to transport particles to other locations instantaneously... how to manipulate the atom for energy... and we will eventually reach a point of human evolution where our knowledge and ability will be omniscient and omnipotent...

But God knowing all and creating the whole universe in 1 day by mere thought? Impossible!
