Does Intel 1366 have a HYBRID tri-channel?

You know how Intel has hybrid mode for dual-channel RAM? Like say you have 8GB + 4GB sticks, it'll run dual for the first 4+4, then single-channel for the remaining 4GB on the 8GB stick.

Will the 1366 Tri-channel mobos do something similar?

I'm thinking of building a second computer in the house and my 1366 currently has 3x 2GB sticks. I'd pull out two of those for the spare machine, replacing them with 4 giggers. 4+4+2

Will it run tri for the first 6, dual for 4? Slow down to dual for all? Wig Out and go single-channel for all?

Thanks, experts!

I'd just make your life simpler by going 4+4+4 and sell the extra 2GB for quick cash.

But to answer your question, I honestly don't know.

Where do you get this information from? You can mix n match memory, but why would you? Unless you have too much hair on your head............For a triple channel board, your just asking for issue's.

You'll most likely end up going down to single-channel. Hybrid wasn't introduced until Sandy Bridge IIRC.

I know for certain it was around for the late Core2Duo era, when it started using DDR3.

Still searching for more info though... *dig*dig*dig*

Heh... I'd buy the three 4GB sticks but no one is selling any used ones locally for a good price. New, it's notably cheaper to get 'em in pairs. Singles are overpriced.

I was just thinking 10GB is a decent number for now, and if the secondary machine is a 1150 cheap dual-channel, I can jump up to an i7 down the road and keep the good RAM, putting the deuces back into the 1366 Xeon to sell IT off.

Just thinking out loud and soliciting opinions.

AHA!! From a 1366 mobo manual:

"When memory modules of different capacity and chips are installed, a message which says memory is operating in Flex Memory Mode will appear during POST. Intel Flex Memory Technology offer greater flexibility to upgrade by allowing different memory sizes to be populated and remain in Dual/3 channel mode/performance"

Score for a cheap, temporary upgrade!

Ok i have used mixed sets of ram on Dual Xeon 5600 CPUs. Running 4 4gig sticks and 2 2gig sticks do let you run in triple channel mode But i don't know if it works like you said with the extra running as single channel memory. Im running a Lenovo D20 workstation with that configuration now and it still high on memory test. Give it a go it should work
