does it mean my ram is dead?

the ram can't boot the system any more. it is a 512M 333mhz non brand name ram, which I bought from last year. recently, I bought a VIA p4pb and put this ram on it. first, the system can't boot and got some alert BEEP, sound like the power problem or something. I forgot what exactly it beeps like. I shut down the pc and take the ram out. after a few day, I use another ram(Kbyte from OMAX)and boot the pc. it works. I am wondering it maybe that ram has a problem. however, before I put it on the new pc, it was working prefectly in another PC.

today, I put it back to another PC, which the ram originally belong to. NOT, it doesnt work anymore. the phenomenon is same! when the power is on, no beep, the fan and other things seem work well. but just don't have picture to the monitor. switch another ram, don't change anything else. turn it on, after one beep like usual, it can boot to W2k or enter the bios. based on my experience on the pc , it is difinately memories' problem.

plus, when i put a 256m kbyte ram and it together and power on the pc, the pc can recognize 256M only. also , can't boot up to W2k, a blue screen!

but i just don't understand how came the ram can die like that, I only use it for trying to boot my new pc- the p4pb. any one had the same experience on that?

Static or capaticence discharge. That's why it's a good idea to ground yourself and unplug (and discharge by hitting the power button after unplugging) the computer before tinkering with it.

Hey, at least it was cheap RAM.

I always keep my system plugged in when I change parts.
My thinking is that the power cord ground provides a path for static discharge when I touch the case.

if its one long beep and its in a continuious loop the memory is bad. I had a stick of crucial pc2100 DDR go bad on me. I didn't even touch it or change it, I just went to boot up my computer in the morning and it gave me that beeping alert, I didn't know what it was at the time but after reading this page that tells the different alerts I changed out the ram and it worked.

I just bought one of these PCI POST cards from this dude. He shipped fast, and I've already used the card to diagnose a bad MB. It's not one of those things you use everyday. But for the $$ it's nice to have on hand.

no a cheap one. at the time I bough it, it cost $120!!! too bad... my ram . gotta find another hot deals for ram..
