Would you trust them to change the oil in a BMW ? (Don't wanna pay the dealer $100 for an oilchange and I don't have time to do it myself)

Edit: So Jiffy Lube is out -- anyone know independent bmw shops in the bay area? I need to get my sideskirts re-secured or something as well, they're pretty loose.

what model and year bmw? have a friend that had one and it required some special thing to reset the oil indicator. dunno if jiffy lube has that. he bought one so he could change his own oil

i'd stay away from jiffy lube, actually let me rephrase that.......i'd stay away from all shops that do oil changes. how is it that you have time to take it into a jiffy lube but don't have time to do it yourself? c'mon it's your 'baby,' treat her right.

She is my baby, but this week is hell school-wise and I honestly don't have time to spend in the garage. Jiffy lube is like 30 minutes max and it's on the way home The oil is below the lowest mark .. very very bad.

I would NEVER take a BMW there. I used to work for a place like Jiffy Lube and I can tell you some horror stories about what went on. Dont use a quick lube, try a trusted mechanic before that. You're taking your cars life at risk if you go to Jiffy Lube.

I've used jiffy lube before, many times actually. I guess it depends on where you come from, are the people there honest??? I trusted the people that did mine, hometown people, and knew a couple of them from school and football. Still have the car, and got it 3 years ago so they didn't do anything to dramatic to "kill" it. Just depends i guess.

Do it yourself, can't take anymore than 30mins...Take a plug out of the sump, drain the oil, change the filter and put new oil in....How hard is that?????

Jiffy Lube does suck. It's one of their advertizing claims that the way their drain your oil by sucking gets out more of your old oil than you or your mechanic do by a simple draining. An oil change isn't rocket science. I use them all the time. It's nice to be able to drive in and get free top offs any time you want.

my family uses the tire joints, like (i dont know if you guys over in cali have em) tire kingdom. we're out of there in about an hour. how many ways can you screw up dropping the plug and pulling the filter, besides forgetting to put the gasket between the engine and filter back?

if the level is low, just head over to the auto parts store and pick up a can of 30 weight.

I have replaced more oil pans than I care to remember because of these "Quick oil change" shops.
At least once a week I get a customer in with a stripped oil pan bolt crying that thier car is leaking oil.

You don't have to get the oil changed because it's low, you can add some in to hold you over to the oil change interval. I assume you are due for a change, but, it's not 100% clear.

Anyway, I had good luck at Super Walmart but, I don't own a fancy foreign sports sedan so I don't know if they'd have troubles with one. The price for Mobil-1 oil change was el-cheapo and you can watch what they are doing if you like. They might not carry the right filter for a BMW, and they didn't offer the synthetic filters I've gotten elsewhere. Still if you change your oil frequently, the filter or the oil is not likely going to be a problem (the crappy ones have worked for years and years). I just prefer the extra insurance I get by using FULL synthetics.

I've also had good luck at the Mobil Gas dealer that has an OilChange drive thru, but, it's too far from where I currently live and it costs a bit more AND they are doubtfully any better than any other jiffy lube place.

hey d-man, how much is a mobil one change? my family is too cheap to use synthetics, let alone name brand stuff. we just use valvoline, or pennzoil, or whatever the guys have in the 55 gal drum.

Heh, $100 for an oil change at the BMW dealership. My Honda dealership is actually cheaper than Jiffy Lube for an oil change, they use Mobil oil, a genuine Honda oil filter, and they even replace the little aluminum press washer on the oil plug. Can't beat that value!

BTW, the dealership I use is Richfield-Bloomington Honda, for folks in my area who care.

I use Pacific BMW for the car's service..

its not 100 bucks for the service. its more like 50+tax .. but usually my bills are around 200 cause I have them do other stuff. I take my car in every 12000 miles so they do a 2x service.. but its worth it. Every 3000 miles I check the fluids and stuff and usually add some oil to top it off.

Its a 3 series from 1996

I have heard Jiffy Lube use teh cheapest oil and filters available. Plus you'll likely get some min. wage 18 year poking around your engine.
I woudl not use them.

I use a local small auto repair shop for mine - $25.
Plus it saves you the hassle of getting rid of the old oil.

The first and last time I went to Jiffy L00b, first they tried to fit the wrong oil filter and almost broke the housing, and then they FORGOT TO PUT THE DIPSTICK ALL THE WAY DOWN!!!!

You can imagine what happens when you drive your car around for two days with the dipstick loose, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR CAR HAS A TURBO AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT GETS VERY HOT!!!

After THAT disaster, they DID gladly pay for the engine wash treatment, detail cleaning, and another oil change. But I will never go back there again. They do use some damn good oil though (Pennzoil is the best!)

EDIT:

I now take my car to SpeeDee where they use Mobil 1 and it costs $29.95
