Episode 3 > Kotor 1 & 2

Just shut up and stop trolling.

To the actual OP, hopefully if you're playing an RPG, there are two main things that matter to you: Characters, and of course, the story.
Of course these things are subjective, but easily the vast majority of folks agree that the story is exceptionally well done and the characters are some of the most likable in a modern RPG (even Carth and his whining is endearing in a cheesy way)

And if you're a Star Wars fan who isn't a troll like futurefields, you'll likely find fewer more compelling games in the SW universe.

Short answer; there's a reason it's still held in such high regard by the vast majority of gamers out there.

Dude, I feel the exact same way. Like everything after NWN is the same game, just a different skin.

Odd. I've completed NWN and both Kotor games. I didn't get any feeling of similarity between NWN and Kotor, and while I've played Kotor 1 & 2 through a few times so far (usually once every couple of years I think), I haven't re-played NWN at all as it seemed very repetitive in hindsight. I bought NWN with two expansion packs, and after completing the main game, I tried one or both of the expansion packs and it simply didn't grab my attention at all.

Question re: KOTOR1,
in the final battle at the end of KOTOR1, does anyone else have to play it like it's a re-enactment of the Colosseum gladiator scene in Life of Brian? Ie. Hit wotshisface a few times, get seriously injured, then run away for about ten minutes while doing the other thing so he can't keep rejuvenating?

KOTOR was good but it left me disappointed in a lot of respects. The classes were imbalanced with almost nothing to make up for it, making me feel gimped if I took anyone other than Jedi along with me. Because the party size was so small, characters that I would have loved to have in my party instead were put on the ship unless the story obviously called for one of their skills. I wasn't expecting to be so limited in choice: all game I kept everyone upgraded with the best weapons, waiting for the point when we'd group together as 5 or 6. You can imagine my disappointment finding out that not only doesn't this happen, but
in the final battle
,
you fight alone.
I felt it could have done better by keeping a linear storyline after the first planet as well. I know that's RPG sacrilege to say, but with the limited locations and the fact the quests were pretty contained to each, it didn't even come close to the feel of exploration of BG1. Instead it just felt like the story got murky and put on pause and I missed the tight, objective-oriented gameplay it started with.

If you get the right power, you can use the captured Jedi to rejuvenate yourself, which also of course means Malik can't use them. There is also a belt that greatly reduces electrical damage. With this the final battle is actually quite easy.

I think KOTOR 2 did a better job in this. It still has a non-linear storyline in that you get to choose from 4 or 5 planets for the mid-game after the prologue planets are done. But there are a lot more unique dialogue scenes and events that happen during each planet and in the transitions that make it feel more connected.

Get the community patch if you do want to play KOTOR 2. It unlocks a lot of unfinished content, and there is a second patch that unlocks a entire planet. Plus a lot of bugs are fixed as well.

I never had issues with the final encounter in KOTOR 1. I always built dual wielding lightsaber masters, and they owned hard. Light or dark.

If you're a ranged class, I hear that as you walk up to him, lay a ton of mines until the fight triggers, then just backtrack and watch him die. By end-game, any style character will be ridiculously OP if you allocate/equip correctly.

i still fire the game to play an old mission or two just for nostalgia from old saved games. time passes, the KOTOR 1 and 2 are still nothing short of pure awesomeness

For the KOTOR 1 final fight, I've read (but not tried) this:

you can supposedly kill or life drain the captives so he can't feed on them

But I usually play as a Guardian so I bash him to death instead. Medpacs and heal as needed.

I bought both 1 and 2. I've played 1 up to the point that you leave Dantooine and can explore the galaxy at will, but have lost the will to fire it back up despite the fact that
I genuinely really want to know what the heck happened with the Star Forge
. I can see why they were so popular for their time, but they feel like a definite evolutionary step behind the Mass Effect series and have had a hard time really getting in to it. There's also a lot of "down time" (mainly running around the planet and reading text I'm not that interested in but am reading to make sure I don't miss anything important) that can feel a bit tedious.

I'm guessing it's kinda like me and Final Fantasy VI. It was my first FF game and I loved it. I still consider it the most enjoyable FF I've played and am sure I could enjoy it again... but I also recognize that's heavily because of nostalgia and that someone that's only played FFVII+ would probably get bored before they even made it to the Opera scene!

I don't think so.

The only games that really hold up in modern day are games that rely on pure reflexes and are abstract in some way.

I've played all the way through both games more times than I can count. I played KOTOR 1/2 back when they came out, then I played them a whole bunch of times over again. I still play them even today.

The one issue I have with is that both of these games are a breeze. I can blow through them without ever encountering a serious challenge. The second one is especially bad in this regard.

Definitely dated by today's standards but I think it's easily still playable, as it's a great game. I wish i could play it through for the first time again, but I'm also a big fan of the gametype, I love RPGs with "companions".
