Nope, they don't work, at least not AGP versions. Someone got something badly wrong when designing the AGP interface on the Kyro2.

I've been running my Hercules 4500 Kyro2 on both a SIS746 and SIS748 without any problems at all, ofcourse they can't operate at anything but 2x agp but any recent motherboard shouldn't have a problem running a Kyro2. I even managed to get an impressive 3dmark 2001 score of 4126 (with an xp3000 cpu ofcourse) which isn't bad for such an old video card with 166mhz sdr memory.

Btw incase you didn't know the latest drivers are v2.1 and are available from:-

PowerVR drivers v2.01.21.0007

That's funny because the Kyro2 runs fine on the very latest motherboards using a SIS chipset.

It doesn't even _fit_ if it's really AGP 2x. Simply because the card, if keyed correctly, should be mechanically blocked by the non-matching keying of the AGP slot on the board.

If a card actually is 2x-only but is keyed "universal", thus fitting 4x/8x-only boards, then things are in danger of going bzzzt. That because the signalling voltages don't match.

The original Kyro was 4x however the Kyro 2 uses 2x as default for stability reasons and has to be modded to run at 4x, so technically it's a 4x video card.

Let's not forget the Kyro 2 Ultra (Hercules 4800) which was due for release was just a 200mhz Kyro 2 running at agp 4x.

thanks for sharing.
what is your thoughts about the speed and stability of the sis748 to the nforce2..is it just as fast and stable? would i notice any change if i switch to sis748 from nv400?

Thanks nemesis ... so the Kyro chips are capable of 1.5V signalling, as required for 4x/8x-only mainboards.

Kyro 2 and all 3dfx AGP cards will not work on NForce 2 or any Intel chipset released within the last 1-2 years.

Hmmm I didn't know the Kyro2 didn't work on Nforce2, kinda weird considering it works perfectly using both my asrock sis 746fx and sis 748 motherboards which both use 8x agp.

Here is a review which features a Kyro2 and GF2 MX400 running on a SIS746fx motherboard.

recent review featuring the hercules 4500 kyro2

Well as has been stated above, some (most?) Kyro2 cards need to be altered to run in 4x mode required to provide the 1.5V signalling voltage. Recent boards, which are 4x/8x AGP _only_, require 1.5V signalling from the card.

(btw, an AGP card that has both notches in its connector to indicate 3.3V and 1.5V sigalling modes _must_ auto-switch between these. Else it's broken by design.)

I have tried a Kyro II in two different Nforce 2 boards, it does not work. However, it did work in both a KT400A and a KT600A. Actually when used with a 2400+ the Kyro II did manage to muster a decent 70 fps in Unreal Tournament at 1152 x 768 with all details on high.

I should probably mention that the SIS746 and SIS748 motherboards have an agp3.0 slot which can run video cards at agp 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x. The agp slot only supports 1.5v (3.3v will fry the board) and the Kyro 2 runs fine with only 1.5v at 2x agp.

1x/2x AGP with 1.5V signalling is something that doesn't (shouldn't) exist. 1x/2x modes use 3.3V signalling.

All SiS 746 or 748 boards I am aware of have their AGP slot keyed for 1.5V-only. 3.3V-only cards don't even fit, mechanically.

Yes all of the SIS746 and 748 motherboards have a 1.5v AGP slot. The Kyro 2 is just a speed bumped Kyro and if you remember the Kyro was released as a 4x agp video card and the Kyro 2 was released as a 2x agp video card because of unknown stability reasons therefore it fits in the slot and works fine.

You said that above, I heard you

What we need to make sure here is whether those speed-limited cards still switch to 1.5V signalling although they're limited to 2x AGP mode. This would make plugging them into 4x/8x boards electrically safe, yet still it would be in violation of the AGP specification nonetheless, which is possibly why they don't work in certain boards.

What happens on the NForce boards if the cards are modified to do 4x AGP?

this is ridiculous. my aopen kt600 refused to boot with the kyro2 in the agp but if i take it out, it would boot. anyone have any other idea..otherwise this board will be shipped back)
