Does "The Club" deter common theft anymore?

to the casual thief, yes. to the prepared one? no. all you do is cut through the steering wheel, slide the club off, and you're good to go.

You really wanna protect your car?

Let a Rottweiler sleep in there.
Even if they could deal with it, thieves dont want the hassle.

Whats the cheapest way to protect a car parked in an apartment complex from being stolen?

Sleep in it

Seriously though
1) Remove anything that might be considered to be of value to a casual person (deterrent to break-in)
2) Lock it up (deterrent to casual thief)
3) Visible deterrent - Club (deterrent to casual thief)
3a) Dummy alarm light
4) Audible Alarm (deterrent to casual thief)

A determined or professional thief is going to get the vehicle no matter what you do.

You can also buy a blinking red LED light thats simply hooked up to a battery, but gives the impression of an alarm.

I would think The Club is more effective now than it was in its heyday, because now its novel again. It wouldnt stop the thief if they came back and were expecting it, but it might surprise them enough to move onto another car. After all, who in the hell uses a Club these days?

I saw a lady putting one on her old Saturn and almost laughed.

Also, I thought thieves could just drill the locks out?

put a boot on your own car with your lock

I was just going to say - if you REALLY wanted to protect your, can you just put a boot on it?

Though if they have enough time, could they simply remove the wheel (very common for stealing tires) and either replace it with a different wheel or tow it?

Does your car have an immobilizer? That technology has pretty much wiped out common vehicle thefts (as long as the driver doesn't do stupid things like leave their keys in the vehicle).

Edit: Sorry, just noticed that you have a 1996 Accord while the first Accord with immobilizer were the 1998 models.

Many boots have a plate that is clamped over the lug nuts.

I can't imagine a situation where somebody is targeting a car so precisely that they'd try to figure out a way around the boot rather than just moving on to an easier score. It'd have to be one nice car to make it worth it.

True story; A neighbor with a very long narrow driveway, house on one side, fence on the other, had his wifes' car stolen, --------- HE WAS PARKED BEHIND HER!
