Does the DS live up to the hype?

Now that my xbox has given up the ghost with a RRoD, I've been eyeing up a DS. I last had a gameboy when they came with a B&W screen (about 12 years ago or so). I had lots of fun playing Tetris in high school.

Fast forward to the present. I keep hearing lots of great things about the DS. My only concern is that most of the games I see are geared towards 8 year olds. My game tendencies lean towards blowing stuff up on my xbox, but my two favorite games appeared on the N64: Mario 64 and ZeldaoT.

Just wondering what the DS has to offer for a "mature" gamer (gosh, I'm almost 30).

Thanks.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. However I'm only 19, and the last portable system I had was a GBC. I plan on getting the Zelda LE DS Lite that comes with the Zelda game, but the main thing I'll probably end up using my DS for is to play old-school SNES and NES games...

I love my DS. I've been having a lot of fun playing tetris recently...

If you're looking to blow stuff there's Worms: open warfare 2 and Metroid Prime: hunters. Along with the standard Mario & Zelda games. Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario bros, and Windwalker(or whatever it's called). *edit* Phantom Hourglass!

YES DS is all that and a bag a chips. Pair it with an R4 or M3 DS Simply and it will rock your portable world.

I'm older than you and I have a DS - it's pretty fun. I don't have many games but I've played Advance Wars - Dual Strike, Trauma Center (imagine a way cooler version of the game "Operation"), Lost Magic and Yoshi's Island. I'm probably going to get Worms 2 for Christmas. I will second onlyCOpunk's recommendation for getting a flash card - I have the CycloDS Evolution + EZ Flash 3in1. I don't use them for piracy, I just like not having to carry around any game cartridges with me - all my games are basically built in now. Plus I can mess around with the homebrew stuff.

I'm 26 and I  my DS. I play it when I'm riding the exercise bike in the gym at work.

There is a new Zelda game for the DS, plus one from the GBA.

The Advance Wars series is awesome too.

I am considering either a PSP or a DS.
Suggestions?

I looked at the line up of games, and the PSP stuff appeals to me a bit more (particularly the GTA games)

I've always found Gamespot's review list to be a useful guide for finding good games.

DS is better for the quirky stuff, especially with the stylus. But if you prefer a more console-like experience, PSP is the way to go.

Can you tell me more about SNES/NES on DS? Friend gave me a R4 and I am getting DS b4 X'mas. I would love to play some 1943, double dragon..etc.

The SNES emulator isn't perfect, but aside from some screen stretching, the NES one works great. Wish the NES one had savestates! Or maybe it does and I just haven't found them.

I've never seen a emulator that didn't offer savestates. Not saying it does but it would be the first.

I find it very similar to the Wii. Very few great games, lots and lots of crap.

i got one of the older DS's. my wife and 5 yr old loved it. i could never get on it!

so i purchased a black DS with passme card. m ydaughter kept takeing it to play nintedogs . so i got her a pink DS.

I got myself a R4.

I LOVE THE DS. best system i have purchased.

i have a stack of DS and GBA games to play. All the FF's (just picked up revenent wings) and a bunch other RPG's.

also there are a bunch of kids games.

i play my DS a lot. but since i have arthritis in my hands it limits the amount i can play. and the little stylus it comes with sucks.

Can you hook up a DS to a tv? Some of the games worth playing and with Console games running $60 it would be better on the wallet but I can't stare at a little screen like that for longer than a couple of minutes.

I guess with the dual screen it would pretty much be out of the question... guess I'll look at the PSP.

The PSP got an FFT port, that is the biggest news I recall. It's a sexy port too, but then DS got FF3 DS, FF12 RW, FF4 DS and FFTA2 coming soon...

29 here and I love my DS. Been playing Panzer Tactics which is a turn based WW2 game lately, very fun. I've also enjoyed the Phoenix Wright games, and Advance Wars. Currently also brushing up on my Spanish for my trip to Mexico with My Spanish Coach.

If you're looking for short bursts of fun, portable gaming, DS wins hands down. The PSP delivers more of a portable console experience, but that doesn't always translate into the best portable gaming experience.
