Lucy is an upcoming film starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, and as you'd expect for a star-studded summer release, it's got a lot of marketing behind it, mostly in the form of this trailer. A trailer in which Morgan Freeman is prominently featured telling Congress that humans only use 10% of their brain....

Am I wrong for getting so furious at that line that I literally (figuratively) hurl my remote through the TV? Why is "we only use 10% of our brain" still a workable movie plot when it's complete fucking bullshit? "Here Morgan Freeman, carve out the 90% of our brain we don't use and leave a perfectly normal human behind; I'll wait." It's fucking nonsense. And worse than that, somehow if we could access more of our brain, suddenly we can defy physics? "I can access 80% of my brain; that equals BULLET TIME." Are you fucking kidding me? WHY IS THIS A PLOT IN 2014?!

So, yeah, someone is trying to take Michael Bay's crown for "most ridiculous bullshit passed off as clever," and I think they're gonna give him a pretty good run this summer. I missed my calling not being a movie producer (because let's not pretend this had "writers"); apparently you can shit in a binder, call it a script and still make millions.

And I'll still probably see it when it comes out, because, fuck it, Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. :wub:

I saw the trailer but it bothered me for a different reason.

Over exposed actor/entertainer, faux hype, the fact that i'll probably see the trailer another 200 times etc. I instantly said "ugh, give me a f'ing break". Perhaps I do it to keep my sanity. I saw the new transformers trailer. "HOW MANY MORE F'ING TRANSFORMER MOVIES?", "are those f'ing dinosaurs? give me a f'ing break". Etc etc etc.

Just pretend it's set in a reality where human brains really are only utilized 10% by the body.

Milk it until it's no longer sufficiently profitable.

Wait 20 years.

Repeat.

I guess I'm lost here, they take this girl, implant her with a bag of drugs so she's a "mule" and somehow this procedure gives her infinite power and knowledge?, I don't get it..

People flock to movies about comic book characters, sentient robots, vampires, aliens from outer space, and thousand other idiotic things. And something like that actually bothers you?

This doesn't look good.

Might be entertaining, but not good.

I had a similar reaction to the premis based in BS but people peddle pseudo-scientific BS to Congress all the time.

I finally saw the trailer last night, and it looks unbelievably stupid. I mean, how do drugs give her these crazy abilities, even if the 10% thing were true?

That being said, it's Scarlett Johansson, so I will see it on DVD at least. As long as you switch your brain off before you watch it, it should be good mindless fun. At least it'll only take 10% of your brain to understand it.

I had already seen the trailer for it prior to yesterday, but yesterday... I saw the TV spot play over and over and over. Honestly, I didn't really even think much about the premise the first time I saw the trailer. It just looked like some crazy-ass action/sci-fi flick. However, after seeing the TV spot constantly, I was finally able to look past the Scarlet and the crazy action.

I was mostly planning on seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes of the Prepositional Phrase (made the exact same lame joke about the last one too) anyway. So, not too sure if I'll see Lucy this weekend or at all.

Actually, I just looked it up, and I thought it came out this Friday. It actually comes out two weeks later! It's probably a safer bet to release alongside Hercules than the latest Apes movie, which the TV spot told me is the Empire Strikes Back of the series!

the drugs don't give her these abilities. they do something to her brain that unlocks the other 90% unused portion and that gives her abilities. jesus christ, at least get it right if you're gonna bitch about it.

Agreed. The mind over matter part is even more ridiculous.

Technically, the drugs did give her the powers. It might not be their direct effect, but without the drugs you don't get the extra 90% so you don't get the powers. Regardless, though, it's still a pretty dumb premise, and probably still a decent no-brain popcorn flick.

I just watched the Star Trek TNG episode again last night where Barclay gets super smart and takes over Enterprise. I enjoyed it despite how stupid the premise is.

Edit:

I just saw the trailer and yeah the dialogue is stupid. However even with the same premise and plot, the dialogue could have been tweaked a bit to be less annoying. So I agree, the writing is irksome, but a superior writer could have come up with a very similar story that would work better.

The premise of the movie is to question what might actually happen if we could use more of our brains. Lucy, with only a short time to live, must also decide how to use her powers, should she be able to achieve this.

There are three hypotheses:
1) we are connected to every other living thing by a single cell;
2) that cells, given two different environments, destructive or beneficial, will either try to pass on it's knowledge, or procreate. Humans, therefore, are not "different";
2) that it isn't mathematics: 1+1 = 2, that is the universal constant; it is time.
3) that experiencing physical pain is keeping us from accessing more of our brain because the pain is stopping further access;

There is a quote from the 1999 movie, "Stigmata":
"The Kingdom of God is inside you and all around you, not in the mansion of wood and stone. Split a piece of wood and God is there. Lift a stone and you will find God."

If you take the "...wood and stone" as a metaphor for the human body, Lucy, by being able to access 100% of her brain, metaphorically would become "God". Knowing that she is facing "destruction" she has the opportunity to pass on her knowledge to the scientists and the rest of humankind. Whether she can achieve this is the subject of the movie because of her race against time.

Sorry to take it a bit deeper than just enjoying Scarlett Johannson in the role. I, for one, enjoyed her interpretation of the part. She is a blithely ignorant but intelligent worldly female who gets thrown into a scenario that would terrify anyone who is about to meet their doom. Unlike the Faye Dunaway character in King Kong however, who is purely a victim unable to change her "stars", Lucy rises above. She becomes a heroine instead of just a victim.

For all of the above, I think the movie breaks new ground. Remember in the original series of Star Trek, when Uhura had that (now huge) ear piece for communicating wirelessly? Well, it happened, and not 300 years from now. So I think this movie may do the same.

The movie was well done, even with the over-the-top theatrics, in the vein of any of the Marvel comic movie genres. Just go with the premise, sit back and enjoy the ride.

This isn't one of those "dream sequence" movies where in the end we find she was in some kind of drug induced coma fighting for survival and they end the movie with a close-in shot and she opens her eyes or some shit is it?

Seems like they could take it that way...

It is a Luc Besson movie. It is going to either be really good or total shit. I am going to lean towards the 'total shit' category, but I'll see it anyway. ScarJo is hot and the idea is outlandish, but decent enough. I mean, who would have said "a professional hitman adopts a young girl, bent on revenge for her family embark on quest to kill a drug dealing, pill popping DEA agent" was a good idea for a move. It isn't, but the Professional is fucking amazing.

It's just an excuse to sell the premise of "Watch Scarlett Johansson do stuff for an hour and a half."

Not a good excuse mind you (terrible plot), but an excuse nonetheless.
