Does the on-board sound and LAN hold me back in overclocking like a sound card in my PCI slot would? I am planning to upgrade my computer to:

Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus (On-board Sound, 6 USB, and a 10\100 LAN)
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
512MB DDR PC2100
ATI Radeon 8500
Maxtor 4K080H4 80.0GB
A Decent HSF and Case
Windows 2000 Professional

Is there anything I should Change?
What kind of results could I get from overclocking (I am assuming that I can get it up to 1.60 GHz)?

I dont know if i understand the question fully, but neither LAN nor ur on board sound card shoulld have anything to do with overclocking ur CPU. LAN in itself wount do any harm, but the ethernet card u use to be connected to LAN may have some issues runnning at faster speed (but i dont see that happening).

i think he is refering to overclocking the fsb (when you overclock the fsb it overclocks the pci and agp bus.... and... some soundcards/network cards will not function on an overclocked pci bus)

but to answer your question "yes" if you overclock the fsb it can affect onboard sound/network and any other onboard device... including IDE controller

He is right. The onboard components might have less tolerance level on the off spec PCI bus speed...coz normally they're of lower quality.

I wouldn't worry as much about the sound on the dragons, its pretty good quality. Maybe the promise controller though. I have ran my original Soyo Dragon at 140+Mhz FSB, and it seemed fine. I'm not sure if the applies to the kt266a chipset, but all of the kt266 boards had problems with USB at O/C FSB settings. typically anything over 140Mhz would cause you to lose USB. If you do get this problem, consider disabling the onboard USB and buying a cheap USB PCi card for 20 or 30 bucks.
