Does the SLK-900 cool better than the Alpha 8942?

Well from what I have heard alphas are really great heat synks. although for maximum cooling I Think that the slk 900 out performs it a little. I mean the thing is like 550g of copper, its a monster. You really cant go wrong with eather unless you dont have alot of space. I have heard the slk 900 and 800 has some dificulties with some motherboards like the nforce. It works on it but you have to bend some capacitors out of the way or something along those lines. Both are great heat synks though.

other than the fact that the SLK-900u cools better than the Alpha 8942. i have the 8942, and a friend of mine has the SLK-900U. i tested them head to head, and with the same medium power YS-Tech 80mm fan, the SLK-900U was about 3 degrees cooler.

And with the Shin Etsu G-751 thermal compound it will drop the temps at idle by another 3C and load 7C, so it has been said.

My own little head to head coming soon.

And for $50 bucks it better do something.

Good luck spreading that Shin-etsu compound. It is a serious PITA. It just kind of sticks to the credit card and balls up as you try and spread it on the IHS. I warmed it up a little and tried again, still basically no luck. I finally gave up and tried to clean it up with acetone but it left a gray haze on the IHS that I couldn't get off. I tried alcohol, soap and GooGone and nothing touched it.

Anyone want to buy one brand new tube and one damn-near full tube of Shin-Etsu G-751? I'll sell it cheap.

Edit - Please tell me you didn't pay $50 for a tube of Shin-Etsu. I got mine for $8 per tube.

Actually you can get this stuff for $4 (.35g) or $8 (1g)

Here

Going to try a head to head on my system to really see if it
really does lower idle and load temps.

Look at the link earlier for Thermal Compounds.

And I was talking about the SLk-900U for $50.

Newegg has the Coolermaster Premium for $5 (for those that want to stick to a well known store). That's also made with Shin Etsu and performed a close second in that round up.

What I think is very ironic is that Artic Silver 3 did so negligibly better compared to the two generic silicone grease compounds. With 1ºC difference in most cases and 2ºC difference in the best case, I really don't think its worth all the hype it's been getting. And it definately isn't worth the $8-$12 price tag. It looks like when I upgrade I'll either be going with the Shin Etsu (if it turns out to be as good as the test indicates) or just stick with the free silicone grease.

I just bought some of that stuff, Nanotherm Silver XTC. So far, I've had it on for one day, and it works as well as ASIII so far.

Honestly, is it even worth the extra money when you only get 1-2º improvement over the silicone grease? I honestly don't think so. I would say either the plain jane white stuff or Shin Etsu based compound.

Jhites, was the Shin-Etsu difficult to apply for you?

I'm looking forward to your comparison. I am seriously thinking about getting the SLK 900U.

I just removed the ASIII and applied some Shin Etsu. BOY, it is a PAIN to apply. It's much more pasty than creamy. It's kind of like spreading cold butter over toast. Anyway, I've only had it on for about two days now, and temperatures have been pretty much unchanged. With the ASIII, temperatures were 40*C/52*C idle/load. Now, they're about 40*C/50*C idle/load. Hopefully, after a few more days, the temperatures will drop further.
