Is there a projector that is a stand alone and doesn't need a laptop to use for presentations?

Like you wouldn't give any video inputs to it, but it would be able to do a presentation without being connected to anything?

How would you even get the presentation on it?

Maybe I'm confused.

yea. it's called an overhead projector. you use these clear sheets of plastic and write on them using markers... usually wet-erase kind.

This is a question from my boss, I myself don't know of any, but I thought I would ask. He was wondering if there was a projector that had a floppy or cdrom drive for you to load a presentation on and play from.

I dont think so. Try google?
If he's anti-laptop, tell him to try out a tablet. It would look like one of those touch-screen remotes to the audience.

If you're talking about a powerpoint presentation or something, I'd imagine it would basically have to be a whole computer inside it to run the program though.

I've never seen something that could do this, and I can't prove that such a device doesn't exist, but I imagine if one does it would be more expensive than just buying a little laptop to run it and a standard projector.

He has some other guys who are wanting to go around to different locations and give demonstrations and he says they aren't too savy so he wanted to make it as simple as possible.

Actually I THINK there is a projector that can do this. I don't remember which one, but I think you put the presentations on flash media, and the projector could run them.

My memory could be shot though, but you could try asking/searching over at avsforum.com

Unless you had a timed presentation, that would still require user input for triggering events such as slide changes.

To me, it would seem more cost effective to give them a crash course in playing back a powerpoint presentation.

In order for this to happen, it would be either very limited or very expensive. The most common presentation documents are Powerpoint (.ppd) and Flash (.swf), so any integrated projector would need to support both these file formats. But, then there are other presentation formats, such as movies. Movies are a whole other angle on this. There are so many movie formats (AVI, MPEG, MOV, WMV) and they would all have to be supported. And then you get into matters of storage...in the end it becomes counterproductive for companies to do this.

In short, tell him to get a tablet PC. As previously stated, they'll look like touch-screen remotes if conspicuousness is a concern. Or, wire the laptop through the wall, to the projector, and use a wireless pointer-clicker thing.

I have been to a couple of presentations where there was no computer. The projector had a built in media reader. I think it was a Compact flash reader. I am pretty sure the presenter said that he had to export the powerpoint to jpgs and then just used the forward and reverse buttons on the projectors remote. It has been quite awhile, so I don't remember the brand or model. Just look for one that has a media reader and can read images. Only problem is you lose the advanced features since each "slide" is just a jpg.
