You have no obligation to these people. The nice thing to do would be to tell them why you're not returning their calls but that's it.

So, of course, I voted "Impeach Bush".

Something kinda similar happened to me when I was home on summer break from college. An old childhood friend that I hadn't seen in 10+ years somehow got a hold of me. I went to his house to hang out and within the first 30 minutes found out that he was selling weed. Turns out the only reason he looked me up at all was to try and turn me into a franchise when I went back to school.

After that I never returned his calls, either.

I sometimes will smoke a bowl, go get drunk at the bar, then try to find a girl... and most people consider me a nice guy.

They did not understand I just wanted to have a good time, not a long-term committed relationship.

I don't have any requets not seeing some friends i have had in highschool. they did not want to grow up. they are still living in basements and crappy apartments.

Funny story, more sad actually. Bumped into a junior high classmate I hadn't seen in over two years. One of the first questions asked were: "have you smoked weed?". Right there and then, I lost faith in a LOT of people. Then I went through highschool, saw the other half: backstabbing nerds. So, I have no faith in anyone anymore.

Is that such a bad thing? Smoking can be a great way to connect with someone, especially if you don't have much else in common anymore. Just because you choose not to doesn't make you a better person.

edit: If he repeatedly tried to pressure you into smoking or tried to force a sale... that's not cool. But simply asking if you share a similar hobby doesn't mean he is some awful pothead or something.

Tell them you're busy when they want you to go out and invite them to go somewhere with you and your partner that they would probably find boring, like to a coffee shop or something. If they go, you can hold hands with your partner and make them squirm.

I still hang out with friends I made in high school pretty often, but there is a detectable difference in priorities sometimes. I'm not arrogant enough to say I'm more mature though - I just have had different life experiences in the intervening years and have my focus on new things.

leave 'em behind. you lower your standards, and you'll be doing it more and more even with them not being around. I'm sure you've learned the hard way for a lot of things, but don't let this one bring you down. tell them that it doesn't fit in with your schedule, and that you will help them out with whatever, but you need to tend to your own life, since you're the guy who's number one on the list for working things out, not them.
don't be scared, it's not like you can't live without them, but that doesn't mean they can't still be your friends. tell them straight up, it's not your scene. and they will understand. if they make fun of you, pff, eight years of moving on, the laugh will be on them.

I go through this type of thing every year in school. From Kindergarden to High School. I always had my school chums try to hang out with me when I don't want them there. I just tell them to leave me the hell alone. I could care less about their feelings.
