Does this sound like an ulcer or indigestion?

Saturday I was eating at a restaurant, and after having some chicken, about an hour later on the drive home my stomach started hurting. It was like a stabbing pain, like getting kicked in the stomach. I thought it was food poisoning but I never threw up or left the terminal 6" of my colon in the toilet, and it passed after a while. Since then on the two days which ensued, I got the same feeling after eating breakfast, it feels like I'm getting kicked in the stomach, and also I feel discomfort on the extreme right side of my abdomen. It also pops up for a few minutes one or two other times during the day, but not as bad, and not for as long, and not around times when I eat, which is perplexing.

I NEVER get indigestion or anything so this is kind of freaking me out. I have been under an unusual amount of stress with work, and I haven't been getting to bed on time on account of extra work I have. So now I'm wondering if it's an ulcer or something?

Could it be food poisoning lingering from Saturday evening?

I've had perforated ulcers before. They are not fun. Definitely go to a doctor and get tested.

To me, ulcers feel like a serrated blade sawing back and forth between my chest and my spine. But certainly, it could be heart burn, ulcer, or something else.

To be safe, stay away from caffeine, acidic foods, spicy foods, chocolate, alcohol for a week to see if it subsides. Basically you can eat bread, grains, and plain food. Does Orange Juice make it worse (usually a question doctors ask if you think you have an ulcer)?

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm gonna give it a couple days. What baffles me is that later in the day meals don't seem to bother me really. I just get little flare ups completely independent of eating later in the day for like 5 minutes or so.

(I can't tell if OJ makes it worse or not, i usually mix it in with breakfast so it's there when I have the issue already).

Eat some beets. If it's gall stones it'll either help pass 'em or get 'em lodged in your duct work.

I've had this happen once after eating 2 lbs of beef in one sitting. Felt bad for 2 days. Fasting for that time and drinking a lot of water seemed to help.

If it's that bad see your physician or a gastroenterologist.
Even the real AT doctors can't give you a real diagnosis over the forums (and you can't them if they screw up ).

Not a doctor, but in my experience:

For most GI Symptoms, a regular doctor will do some basic testing and likely prescribe some antacids, tell you to eat healthy foods, and have you come back in a week or two. GI Doc (specialist) will charge more and will do the same to start, but then you'll have your followup tests if there are still symptoms. If you don't already have a GI doc you should call around, usually they take a few weeks to a month to see them.

Since in either case they'll prescribe antacids, you might just want to try some OTC stuff like Pepcid AC for a few days (if it's not already getting better).

You have to judge your own symptoms, if it feels serious go to the doctor, if not, give it a little time and see... for example, if you have a high fever, or turn yellow, or extreme pains that don't go away after a short time, well... that's serious.

yeah that seems to bother my stomach

MrMatt,

My good sir, you might very well have gallstones. Might thee be over 18 yet less than 40?

Try this test:

one meal eat a cheeseburger and fries. Note the stomach pain.

The next meal eat a nice spaghetti, no meat. If there is no pain, the likely culprit is gallstones.

Fatty foods exacerbate gallstones as your gall bladder is a key player in digesting such foods. Go see a doctorb.

I have had ulcers and they are not fun, but I got most of my pain on a empty stomach (when the stomach acid is eating through the stomach lining). If your pain is after eating, it is more likely gall stones.

If you end up with black tarry shit get yourself to a hospital immediately. I didn't and almost bled to death.

Jeez...yeah nothing wrong in that department. It actually wasn't as bad today, not even close, but it was still uncomfortable for a while. I wish my insurance actually covered something besides basic doctors visits

What are you talking about? Health care passed! Obama has saved us all.

Walk into the hospital, and tell them to send the bill to D.C.

When I had two small ulcers in my stomach the feeling was one of a constant dead heartburn feeling in it for 2 weeks straight.
