Does this sound right for a dental crown?

I just had a root canal on my lower left molar, which now requires a crown. I called and made an appointment with my general dentist, and they mailed me a pre-estimate today. This is what they are quoting:

Post and Core - $444
Crown - $1416

$1860 for one crown seems insanely high to me. Is this the going rate these days? I'd shop around but don't want to get billed for a bunch of consultations. I only have a few hundred bucks left for insurance since they paid for most of the $1500 root canal...

I'm not getting crowns anymore (via root canal). It's not healthy to have dead tooth in your head, bacteria will live in the dead dentin tubes. Plus it could just go bad some day. A dead tooth can cause all kinds of problems. For that price I might as well get a nice shiny new white implant tooth.

My crowns all included the post and core and the price is 950.00.

And I am in California.

That's twice what my dentist charges. Definitely check around.

My endodontist charges 1250.

Are you getting charged that much because of insurance. Do they bill higher for insurance?

My dentist gives me a 5% discount if I pay cash, so the price drops to 900 and change.

it's about the same in tx - i paid ~$800-900 for a root canal + prep + crown

it really seems dental discount plan costs less than a lot of insurance plans

with a discount plan you sign up (<$10 a month) and it's usable the day you sign up

Implants can fail as well.
Those cost around $4000 when all is said and done, and take around 1 year to complete.

Root canals cost around $1200 for a molar with 3 ..erm.. forgot the official term, but, I will call them roots.

And yeah, the cost of all this stuff is extremely disheartening.

I think mine was around there in CT. I have to have a RCT on an already crowned tooth, it's been bothering me for ~6mo coming and going so I am just going to get it done.

As far as the article about implants. Correlation does not equal causation.

There isn't a single peer reviewed clinical trial that proves that RCT causes cancer. To say otherwise without any scientific background is akin to blaming autism on immunizations. Junk science.

I think what amazes me about dentistry and endodonty/RCT is that it's so...primitive.
