Does What I want Exist?

.....maybe so but I can't remember what it's called.

My mother has a standard def TV in her room with coax, component and composite inputs. I want to send video from a PC in another room to her SDTV using either my wired or Wi-Fi network.

Switching inputs with a remote is about a technical as she can or wants to get, and I need a device she can access by switching inputs with her remote so she can watch streaming video off the internet from the PC across the hall. Does such a thing exist? I think it does but I can't remember now. It's also 0248AM and I'm running out of memory so I may not be thinking clearly.

so you just want to send video signal, not control the computer? Wired will always be better. I would just get one of those cheap small format atom type computers.

So you want to watch internet video on a TV via Wifi. Sounds like you need something like a Roku, Boxee Box, or Apple TV. I think a Roku would be exactly what you're looking for.

How will she control the PC ?... bluetooth keyboard maybe your only option there. Hoesntly doing what it sounds like you want to do will be a pretty big PITA given the TV and without knowing the outputs of the PC.... is there a reason the PC has to be in another room?

1. monoprice.com sells VGA to Composite cables, that should work for your video signal.... audio is another beast. You'll probably have to run a RCA->Mini along with it, but that means it would be using the computer's headphone jack so where-ever the PC won't get audio unless you unplug every time. *Or have a receiver in the other room runing your audio with a speaker or two in your mother's room... which sounds like too much work for your mother to deal with on a regular basis

2. Spend $300 and find a TV with an HDMI so you only have to run one wire through a wall (assuming PC has HDMI out)

3. Roku/Apple TV will give access to netflix, voodoo, hulu, youtube, etc etc and might do what you're looking for. (best bet if it is commons sites she wants to stream)

4. Get a small PC/laptop to run in that room to the TV

5. Use a ps3 and setup a media server on that pc to stream content to the ps3

Get a video card with an svideo out and pull a wire through the wall.

You probably want a dedicated box like a roku or apple TV that supports wifi, and just teach her how to use it.

If by chance you actually want to literally send it from another PC and not buy a dedicated box like a Roku, as in you literally already have a wired ethernet connection going to that room and you just want to use your wired ethernet as a coax or component input for some distance, you can use a pair of baluns:

It's literally an ethernet to video adapter, and back. Buy both a male and a female side. That'll only let her watch, though. It doesn't have the capability to really control what you're watching from that room without someone (like you) going to the PC and "sending" a video to her.
