When a XP based machine puts the monitor on standby , does the screen saver still run?

I don't know for sure but a good way to test would be to set your screen saver to one of the ones that suck CPU such as openGL pipes and measure (system) power consumption after monitor goes to sleep. Chances are it will. The first thing I check on fileservers where people complain about speed is the screen saver. I always set it to blank with pw.

If you mean that, when the monitor turns off (no output from the system thus, standby), I don't believe that the screensaver will run after that point, but it will still ask you for your password assuming that you have password protected on.

It turns off all signals from the video card, which is how the monitor knows to turn itself off. Therefore, the screen saver is not still running.

Yes, the screen saver is still running, but Windows cuts all signals to the monitor (turns of the GPU). I know this because I've moved my mouse after the screen was on standby, and it dropped to the screen saver for a second.

weird i didn't think it would run... isn't that kinda redundant.. like if the monitor is off there's no need to 'save the screen', so to speak

it is kinda stupid, i agree, but the screen saver doesn't stop until the computer goes into standby. I usually just screw the screen saver and let the monitor turn off.
