Does Your Cat Do This?

When my Calypso gets scared, her tail poofs out like a feather duster. I mean, it grows in diameter 3 fold!

Is this a normal thing for a cat to do?

I think its a natural response to fear. By poofing out, it gives the "enemy" the appearance that the cat is acutally larger than it is.

It just makes Calypso, who's normally small and svelte look silly with a giant poofy tail!

My cat does that it's funny. But my other cat is a Persian, so her tail is usually that "fluffy"...

She's fully grown and 6 pounds. Absolutely adorable!

Mine did it just this morning. The biggest real fear she's ever come up against is me picking her up for snuggles, so god only knows why they do it.

And yes, it's perfectly normal. They arch their back when frightened too, for the same reason of making themselves appear larger than they are to an enemy.

Cute kitty!! Almost looks like my baby but not the same. She don't poof her tail, but she's pretty vocal when she wants something. Too bad she doesn't just come right out and say what it is...

People who are not "cat people" just haven't met the right ones. I love dogs; used to hate cats. Same with the wife until we bought her a nice cat which kicks ass. I thought we'd get another one so we did. Finally 2-3 more friends have cats - all of which are awesome. The reason people are not cat people is because they've probably met the wrong ones. My neighbor had a cat that, because of lack of love I think, was mean and crappy!

When my cat would do this, I would wonder "don't they all know they are trying to trick each other?" And therefore it would be ineffective.
