Does your city have a TV-heavy defense attorney?

It seems like every time some criminal gets arrested for a crime that made the news, the same attorney is being interviewed on TV about it. I don't believe all these crooks had already retained the same guy before the arrest, so I'm curious how the crook and the attorney get together.

It plays out like this

Day 1- Crime story hits the news
Day (2-5) - Arrest made, and there's that same attorney being interviewed on the news about his client.

Does the attorney camp out at the booking center, evaluate whether each person being brought in was arrested for a crime that made the news, then if so offer to defend for nothing just to get on TV?

1,000 attorneys in town and the same guy defends almost every perp whose crime was on the news.

The more likely scenario is, the guy is recommended to the defendant by fellow criminals. I know a criminal defense attorney that is well known for handling state and federal drug cases. People that are active in the drug trade in my area always go to her when they get busted because shes recommended to them by past clients.

The guy I'm talking about doesn't seem to specialize.

I can remember crimes where he defended the accused:
- Guy accused of beating his dog to death
- Woman accused of stealing money from police records room
- Guy accused of threatening a wheelchair-bound police officer
- Woman accused of drowning her baby in a hotel room bathtub.
- School bus driver accused of hit-and-run on a pedestrian.
- Guy brings weapons to place that fired him, tells workers to leave, then runs away. No shots fired.

But all these crimes made the TV news when they happened.
