Wow, you guys must not have a family, kids or working significant others. This is a great requirement.

FYI, we do have several closed door offices dedicated for this.

The question is will small businesses currently open be grandfathered in under the old laws? We can't reasonably expect employers to create another room from nothingness, can we?

This is from the same government that just raised the required fuel efficiency for cars by 40% in the next 5 years while at the same time raised the requirement of the amount of ethanol used in cars. Ethanol is less efficient than gasoline so they also just effectively reduced the gas efficiency of cars by 5%.

There is no such thing as common sense and reason when dealing with bureaucracies.

Our office has one, but I only go there when I'm really thirsty.

Also, what do you mean men need a fap room? I thought that's what the room with the microwave is for.

How large a company are you working for?

EDIT: rereading the OP, $500,000 and up seems somewhat reasonable for a "lactation room" requirement.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't mothers milk by far the best for children? Doesn't it boost the immune system, and cut down on childhood illnesses?

And, if you're doing half a mill in interstate business I'm pretty sure you can designate a room with a lock for a women to use for a few minutes each day. Remember, you don't have to set the room aside permanently, and the room can still be used for other things, like a store room, just not accessible for a few minutes a day.

Gotta wonder if it was men who needed to do this, if the gov't would have to have a law for it. Men would have had these rooms, like forever.

Yes, this thread was yet another reminder that most posters here are ignorant kids.

This.

Especially given the study that is on the google news page today about the importance of breastfeeding.

But it involves boobies so the 12 year olds have to laugh?

Meh, parts yes, parts no. I think requiring breaks to allow for the pumping is great.

Most existing women's bathrooms should be 80% fine...maybe needing a little renovation to suit. Maybe require the installation of a changing station in the handicap stall or something so they have privacy, a table top and a little space to work with. I think requiring dedicated private rooms for it is unreasonable.

Are you serious? 80% of restrooms are trashed or disgusting. Would you feel comfortable sitting in your restroom at work and eating your lunch or dinner?

FYI, my wife works in retail 10 hr shifts so my opinion might be slightly biased .

1) The OP is slightly incorrect. The reqirement is that ALL employers have such a room and UNPAID break time, unless that employer has fewer than 50 employees and if the room or break time would be undue hardships to the employer.

2) 48 states already had this law, so in reality, it does almost nothing. Only larger Nebraska and Idaho companies will have to change if they don't already have a room for such a purpose.

3) Since the OP mentions small businesses, one of the first actions of this health care bill is to give money directly to small businesses. That is so horrible, I couldn't stand to get free money if I were a small business! The sky is falling!

It doesn't work that way. If a woman doesn't pump regularly they a) are in a huge amount of discomfort and b) start seeing reduced production.

we have had this argument before. i am amazed so many seem clueless when it comes to breastfeeding.

i think this is a great thing.

Restrooms with the prevalence of e.coli are not suitable. This is food for infants, an e.coli infection that might make you or I queasy could kill them.

it's a small portion. certainly not "society". my wife breastfeeds our daughter all the time in public and we have never received any comments about it. i don't usually even notice anyone looking.
