Does Your Work Provide Sick Time?

If not, do you tend to come into work more often to avoid wasting vacation/PTO?

I don't get sick days, and I get an average number of days off (15 days or 3 business weeks). If I took off every time I was sick, I could probably easily blow through half of that in a year. Now, I rarely get sick, but when I do, I tend to get sick for a good week at a time. Albeit, most of that is just putting up with the annoying cold symptoms, but that's the stuff that usually infects others! So, it's very rare for me to take time off when I'm sick as I just simply can't go around wasting all of my vacation. The way I see it is that if my employer really wants me to look out for the well being of my fellow employees, then give me (and my fellow employees) sick time.

Yes, we get eight per year. This is the first year I've used any.

We get 5 personal days. Basically you can not show up for work 5 times per year. You don't have to be sick or provide a note. If you just cannot make it to work for one reason or another, you can use one of these days. Only thing you cannot do is schedule them in advance.

I get 5 paid days off a year. Unlimited (within reason of course) unpaid time off.

I get 5 sick days, 15 days of PTO, and 10 holidays. Not terrible, but I never get to use them because I still have to hit a billable hour goal.

Yes, I get sick leave. Since there are bunch of people in the office doing the exact same thing I am, I have no problems with using it when I'm not feeling well. Might feel differently if I did something critical.

I do get sick days but, I often forget in the rare event I get sick that I have them. Fortunately, the bookkeeper usually just inputs the time to payroll and reminds me to fill out paperwork when I get back.

Yes. I earn 6 per year and can accumulate up to 18 IIRC. I can accumulate up to 5 weeks of vacation as well.

I rarely ever get sick, so I'll probably keep most of my sick days.

12 sick & 3 personal days each year. I can roll my personal days over into sick time, or cash them in for $100 per unused personal day. Sick time can be rolled over from year to year. I joined the sick bank many years ago - a pooling of sick time, in case someone needed to take off an unusual amount of time (e.g., cancer treatment or some other long term illness) - and had to donate 1 day to do so. Then, there was some reason that they asked people to donate time toward a particular staff member; so that's 2 days used. And, I scheduled an in-office minor surgical procedure once; so that's 3 days used. I have a LOT of time on the books (Another year or two, and I would be able to call in sick every day for a year), plus I get my $300 for personal time at the end of almost every year.

I would have to feel really, really, really bad before I called in sick. I practice a lot of precautions to avoid spreading any illness.

I don't have sick days but I have about 19 or 20 days paid time off and a week I think I will carry over to the new year. I never use my days and usually by the time we have a big release I can take off after being on call for a while. My manager didn't like that I didn't take any days off so I stated taking off Friday's 2 weeks ago and a week off next week.

yes, although we're highly encouraged to work from home rather than calling out sick if we can avoid it.

Job I am at now gives you 24 hours which equals 2 days, job I will be at in 3 weeks gives 16 days to use as you wish vacation and/or sick.

Yup even if Im puking my guts out I get asked to work from home if I can't make it in or am contagious. Which is fine by me but if your so sick you can't focus then that's kind of annoying.

We get a lot of PTO so sick time is PTO time. The last company I had pretty much was the example of why this was phased out. We got 7 sick occurances per year, each could be 5 business days long. Not even a doctor's note was needed.

We were a large company...many of our workers had 35 days of sick time each year. Oddly those same asshats didn't have so much when we went to a 7 day of sick leave time system. Most got terminated shortly after.

We accrue sick time each pay period. I think I have 5 days right now and we can carry it over. I don't get sick very often so I'll just use them for mental health days.

To show the odd disparity that I've seen, while my current job doesn't provide sick days (my previous employer didn't either), my first job actually gave me infinite sick days. There was a limit (I think five days?) that if you hit it, you needed a doctor's note to be able to stay out later. I was with them for about three years, and I never used it until I was scheduled to be laid off in a rather massive layoff (go WARN Act!).

Yes. Used to be 10/year, now it's 5/year.

I think I'd actually be fine with five over none... well, I guess that goes back to anything is better than nothing.

Out of curiosity, what sort of things do you do? I normally just try and avoid talking to people, but that's pretty much my daily routine regardless of being sick. :sneaky:

We count more in hours, but I get 15 days a year and those stack. Though once you get to 1000 hours you either convert to personal or forfeit, weird catch here though is that if you forfeit so many hours it ends up counting towards retirement.

I know of several people that forfeit their personal/sick leave...just don't get it, take a day or two off, not like anyone there 'needs' to be at work 100% of the time.

I try to keep a sick leave balance just in case, but I plan to start using more of it in the future to build my annual leave balance up, because when I walk out the door I get repaid for all my annual leave hours saved up :awe:
