is there such a thing as "paid sick days" where it is beyond your current salary - say you don't use up [all 5 days] then you get additional money for it. Sort of like how unused vacation days would work with some companies - I left a company after only 3 months and they paid me for 3 weeks of vacation.

Yes, but I may be moving companies soon where they are flex time...which is essentially, if you get your shit done, you can have time off. Not sure how I feel about it, but the company sounds great.

Check it out first, a friend worked at a place like that and found out that although the policy existed, people who used it were considered lazy slackers.

What happened in real life was if someone worked very late one day or had to work a weekend, they would arrange with their boss to take some comp time (undocumented). Or if someone who regularly worked 45+ hours a week needed to leave a few hours early for some reason, the boss would give the OK.

But from what I was told, nobody just up and left for the day before 8 hours just because their work was done.

I've heard of people getting that before, but I don't hear about it too often. I think I've also seen where the sick day payout is at a lower rate than vacation would be. That vacation payout that you got sounds pretty crazy though... did you actually accrue that much vacation in three months? When I left my last job about a year ago, I only got paid from what I had accrued from the start of the year (about a week).

I don't have a set number of days for my office employees, but I insist that they stay home when sick, as I don't want them infecting the rest of the office

Out of curiosity, how severe of an illness do you consider it proper for them to stay home?

I'll admit that I'm a little cautious. I don't want it to turn into a deal where you need to work 45+ hours a week constantly because things always need to get done. I did well in my initial interview, and he wants to bring me in to meet the business owners and stakeholders (they are a start up).

We shall see. It's nice to have a little HR/union protection. This company doesn't have that at all.
