My last 2 jobs have not had sick time, nor did they give extra PTO to accommodate illness. I went out for 3 days in December of 2011 with pneumonia and was told that I have to make up those 3 days (and I'm salary). That didn't go over to well and I'm still somewhat pissed about it, especially considering the hundreds of hours of OT that I had worked without as much as a single penny of compensation for it (yes, I know it's part of the salary process but also salary is to be paid whether I work 5 hours, 40 hours or 80 hours).

I can use "sick days" but it's really just a lump classification for leave of absence. I do not get paid sick time.

Pretty soon I'll get 3 weeks holidays so that will help if I want to take sick time with pay (use vaca)

We get PTO only. I work from home when I'm sick. I'd have to be pretty much on my deathbed to not work when ill.

5/month which are bankable, I think I have a couple thousand built up that I am going to use to retire early on.

We just had our sick days taken away this year, and if you call in sick it's an "occurrence", 3 of those and the write-up's start, irrelevant if you've seen a doctor or not. What's fucked up is we make an FDA-regulated product and employees will come in sick due to the new rules, management will tell us "Oh, if your sick we don't want you here" but punish you if you call in, fucked up IMO...

We accrue "personal absence" time (separate from vacation time.) This can be used for any reason, including illness. The catch is that we can only use a certain amount in any rolling 365 day period, no matter how much has been accrued.

Personally, it's rare that I don't show up to work when sick. I work in a cleanroom, so it's not like I can infect anyone. I am very mindful not to use shared items (phones, PC's, etc.) while I'm sick, though.

I get 18 days PTO to do with as I see fit. A typical year will usually have me using 2-3 days for sick time. I don't usually need more than 12 days for actual vacations per year. I can also carry up to 10 days over to the next year, though they have to be used by the end of March or I lose them.

No, and I use PTO when I am sick to avoid infecting others.

I voted with this button because it's what I did this year. I'm now sitting at the end of the year with no PTO left and it sucks. I will need to be at death's door before I take PTO because I'm sick in 2013. I need some actual vacation days damnit! This is the first year we've gone to PTO for sick days. We used to get 8 sick days per year. Combining PTO and sick time together frankly sucks balls.

Remind me never to complain about my sick / vacation time.

We (at my level) get roughly 20 sick days per year which we can bank up to a certain amount. This also doubles as short term disability if needed. (if you use all your sick time each year you get no short term disability)

We also get roughly 20 vacation days and 2-4 "any purpose days" (the number depends on how holidays fall each year). We are only allowed to carry over 5 vacation days to the following year... if you don't use 'em, you lose 'em.

We get 56 hours, I think this year is the 2nd time in 5 years I've called in sick. Some people I work with seem to treat it like an extra week of vacation though.

1 day a month, unlimited rollover. Currently sitting on 280 hours of sick time. I use my sick time even when I have a cold, as infection of any sort spreads like wildfire when you share patrol cars.

I have 14 sick/personal and 3 weeks vacation a year. I can bank sick days unlimitedly and up to a year of vacation days, because of this (in theory) I could currently take off about 3 months of work paid.

I have unlimited sick days (Get paid 90% if I don't come in at all, and 100% if I show up for any length of time, then go home early). I think if I am sick more than 4 days in a row I need a doctor note, but I rarely use them, so I'm not sure.

The downside is that no one does my work while I'm gone, so if I take a sick day I'll pay for it the following days, especially in the summer when it's busy. Usually if I feel like crap I come in, get the urgent stuff done, then go home at noon. Or sleep in and come in later on for a couple hours in the afternoon.

I get:
- Up to 6 months of paid sick leave (to make up for a lack of short term disability, accrued at 1 day per month)
- 10 holidays, accrued to a max bank of 5 days (6 holidays + 4 personal days, accrued at 0.8 days per month)
- Up to 4 weeks vacation (accrued at 1.5 days per month)

* Work doesn't really care how we categorize a single personal day now and then.
* I'm salaried exempt, so they also don't care how I use holidays; but since I can only carry a bank of 40 hours, there's no point in not using them.
* 4+ sick days in a row = doctor note to be cleared to come back to work.

30 sick days, half can be used for family
25 PTO days
2 floating holidays

PTO days can be cashed out at the end of the year if you have any left.

That's 161 days that you can take off including weekends which means you could potentially work only about 55% of the time in a year.

Sick time does not really count against you. Either take the day, or work from home.

That said, I do think there is a cap, but it is not really enforced unless days start to rapidly accumulate.

I think I took around 8-10 sick days this year, I had a bad stomach thing for two weeks. I also have 8 PTO days left which I will probably cash in.

15 / year sick bankable forever. i only use 3-5 a year, now have enough to not need to worry about short term disability.
though we now have some rules in place for taking too many "incidents" in a rolling 6 month period. rules for needing doctor's notes after x days and such. since i dont abuse the sick days, never had a problem though i have seen some good employees use sick time for kid illnesses that have inflexible managers get into trouble.

Nope - it's lopped into PTO [vacation/sick time].

I'm rarely sick and never take vacation, so I usually have to burn off PTO as we're capped at 320 hours and can't sell any of it back.

When I am sick - the office understands that I should stay at home so i don't infect others at work.

Currently: separate sick/PTO days, all paid
Starting in 2013: one bank considered PTO. If you're out sick, you use your vacation days

Two weeks of vacation and 5 sick or personal days. I wish I could get more vacation time but I get what I get for now. I have a friend who who is technically a government employee working for a medical university lab. First year she had 2 weeks and 5 days like me. Second year she got a promotion ($3000/year) with 6 weeks of vacation! Fuck I don't know what I'd do with 42 days free.
