"Doesn't have a Valid IP Configuration" - Help

So I finished building my computer yesterday, fired it up and no problems - except it wasn't able to connect to the internet after installing on necessary drivers. So I plugged my old computer back in and what do you know, I can't connect on that computer now, either.

So I started unplugging the modem, router, etc multiple times (this was all lastnight), and still nothing. Then this morning power cycled everything again - still not fixed.

Heres the thing though, if I take the ethernet cable out of the router, and plug it directly into the modem (so it goes straight from the modem to my computer) then the internet works fine. Problem is now other computer in the house doesn't have internet, just I do. Using the windows 7 troubleshoot tool, while connected through the router I got this.

"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a Valid IP configuration. - Not fixed"

Any ideas on what to do?

Dunno but it sounds like a problem with your router or the router's dhcp is not assigning your computers an ip address. Have you tried assigning static ip addresses within the same subnet as your router? Try doing that to see you if you can connect to the internet. If so, then your router isn't assigning an ip address.

Reset your router, usually by taking some needle to press button down for a few seconds. Wait a bit, then power cycle everything again. Then try going into your router through a browser. After that I don't have much help to offer.

I recently bought a new wireless router and also couldn't connect the internet. After many resets, power cycles everything worked with no configuration. I'm guessing it has to deal with assigning DHCP ip addresses to your devices. Funny thing was that if I made any configurations I couldn't get on the internet. I was about to give up, but then it just connected. I guess sometimes it just take a minute or 10 for the network to establish.

Well, I can't follow that guide, because the Default gateway won't showup when the router is connected.

Most home wireless routers are usually at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. You could try one of these for your default gateway when you're following the link that JackMDS posted. Resetting your router to factory defaults as Generator posted might help. It would probably also help if you post the model of your router.

It's been a busy week but I finally got around to messing with it again. Both 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 don't work, even when trying them in my browser I can't get to router "status page".

This is the router I'm using Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 V1

I'm considering just getting a new router at this point.
