How to induce vomiting in a dog

I wouldn't be running around the house freaking out, but I wouldn't take it TOO lightly either. You didn't mention exactly how much chocolate that equated to, nor did you mention how big your dog is.

That is the question here. How big of a dog are we talking? An adult labrador can eat 2 pounds of chocolate before it dies and I doubt it was a bag of mints with 2 pounds of chocolate (not including the mints).

Folks, yes chocolate is harmful to dogs, but it depends on the size of the dog. I certainly wouldn't induce vomiting unless the vet told me to. Sometimes inducing vomiting can be worse than not inducing it. There's a chance he may have you bring the dog down to drink some activated charcoal. I don't know how large you dog is Vi, but take comfort in that this happened to my neighbor's dog not too long ago. My neighbor had bought me a Chocolate Sampler for helping him with some work at his house. His dog devoured the whole 2lb package. He was fine and he weighed about 80lbs or so. Hopefully your dog will be ok.

One pound bag...65 pound pooch.

Should be fine, but certainly confer with the vet.

my old dog loved chocolate, he used to snag pieces of it here and there often with the wrapper, never harmed him though. he really liked waxy things as well, he at crayons and whole bars of soap whenever he could get his chompers on them.

After reading some of the links and confering with the vet, all we can do is wait it out. Both the links and the vet agree that it's not enough to kill her. But I'm taking tomorrow off so that I can be with her all day and make sure can get outside when the sh!t hits the fan.

She's going to be having some very active bowels the next 12-24 hours.

We had a chihuahua that ate some andes mints, about a half box. Wife took it to petsmart, and the doc there gave it some charcoal stuff that made the dog up chuck. Didn't really phase the dog in anyway. But on a 8 lb dog, the wife didn't want to take any chances.

Our dog did the same thing as a puppy (this was like 5 yrs ago tho) - and it was w/ choc covered cherries. Thing is, our dog is EXTREMELY hyperactive, so it didn't phase her at all (the vet had to give her the anastesia (sp?) of an 80 lb. dog just to knock her out to get her fixed - and that wore off VERY quickly also) - so it's hard to say what permanency will be left in your case. Good luck though - not all dogs can handle chocolate very well.

Trust me, she won't be doing that again.

No, it was like a cookie jar with a lid that just sits on top. I didn't even know there was candy in there. Wife said she just filled up the jar last night.

Our 27 lb cocker spaniel once ate a plate of chocolate cupcakes on one occasion, half a chocolate bunny (2 lb bunny) on another occasion--actually the bunny was still in the box, which had an opening with no plastic on it...so actually she just licked it to death-- vet said to give her some H. peroxide and she was fine--don't know if it induced vomiting or not though. Mind you we didn't find out about the cupcakes or the bunny until hours after she had gotten into them. This was the same dog that got her head stuck in a 20 oz cardboard cashew can and sat patiently waiting until we got home to show us how ridiculous it looked. pets aren't smart.

ok, cocker spaniels aren't smart.

edited for lassie.

Your dog will be fine, I'm sure. Hope the aftereffects tomorrow can all be contained to the outside realm!

I'm really surprised that your dog would have knocked the jar over to get the candy. Does she have a habit of getting up on the table (that you were aware of)?

Every dog we've ever had has gotten chocolate.. whether it was an Easter basket under my sisters bed, or our current dog who is just a pig.. they all get through it. Never seen any il effects.

Damn! I never knew chocolate was poison for dogs! I have a 8 month old chihuahua (first dog) myself and I learn new things about dogs all the time but this I never expected.

I'm sure your dog will be fine as he looks big and strong! Update when things clear up with new pics of your pooch!

Wow, your dog looks so much like my dog when she was younger. Now the fur around her mouth has turned white (she's 9 or 10 years old).
