I am looking for a new pup. Did a bunch of research online, but wanted your personal experiences. I want something that once it is over being a puppy, will be more on the calm side, but will still enjoy a good day at the park, or some frisbee, ball, etc. I have been in contact with a Collie breeder and went to see her dogs. Loved them. I wanted to keep my mind open because I have read they are extremely smart and perhaps maybe with my busy life, not the best choice. Others I had in mind were Great Dane, Great Pyrenees. Your thoughts?? Thanks for reading.

Mixes FTW. Hit up the shelter and look for an adult dog with the termperament you're wanting.

assuming you've got the willingness to exercise it regularly and won't be leaving it alone for 80% of the day, you can't beat a retriever.

Pyrenees are pretty mellow after they grow up. But, they like a lot of exercise. Downside to Pyrs is that they love to bark. They bark at any other dog coming near their territory - that's their instinct. It's a positive trait if you're using them as guard dogs. Negative if you have a lot of neighbors.

I had a GP for over ten years, before she passed away. She was the best dog I ever had. She did have some energy once she was outside, though it was measured. She loved to go for walks, but she was very calm about it. I never even had to teach her to heel while on the leash. She was happy just to walk beside me at my own pace. Of course, during the summer the only time I felt ok taking her for a walk was early in the morning, before the sun came up. It would be easy for her to overheat with her double coat. She also did not play fetch. She would look at me as if I was insulting her intelligence if I threw a ball past her. She seemed to look down on our other dog, who regarded fetch as a grand game.

Inside the house, she basically turned into a white, shaggy rug. Most times she could be found lying down and sleeping. I do not know if these behaviors are specific to the breed, but they are what I experienced with my GP.

Get a German Shepherd. They are very smart, and catch on very easily. Mine learned everything very early as a puppy. Although they do require daily exercise, maybe not the best if you're busy all the time.

Go to the shelter, you'll know the right dog when you see it there. Save a ton of money too, and probably get a dog that isn't going to have a bunch of problems later on being unlike most purebreds.

There's no substitute for going and seeing a bunch of dogs. Shelter dogs are great, especially because if you've got a few shelters in your area you can often see 100+ different dogs in a day. The more you see, the better the chance you'll find the one that seems to click with you.

If you're going to get a specific breed, find a breeder in your area and ask to see and play with the parents. It will give you an idea how the pups will act.

in my life, I've had 3 shelter dogs/mutts and 2 purebreds.

vastly preferred the purebreds over the mutts. not that the mutts were bad (well, ok, one was) but the purebreds (both golden retrievers, one from a breeder and one from a family friend's whose retriever had puppies) seemed smarter, friendlier, better behaved, etc.

When I married my wife I inherited her standard poodle.. I am glad too... I loved that dog like my kid.. It was the worst day of my life when she died from kidney failure.
We got another standard poodle ( a male) and he is just a big ol wuss. I love him as well like a kid.. Very smart and loving and strong as an ox.

Thats how I got my last two. Its nice getting one that has already developed its personality. Doesn't hurt that they both of mine came house trained and one knows a bunch of tricks already. You don't have to get a mix either. Lots and LOTS of purebred dogs end up in the shelter when they get over the cute stage and/or enter the destructive stage that some dogs go through.

If you go through a breeder go through a good one which will mean big bucks. They will have showed and/or health tested both parents. You don't want a dog from some smuck that is just doing it to make a few extra bucks or because puppies are cute. They don't give a shit if their dogs are worth breeding.

My family has had two mutts and two purebreds. I loved the mutts but purebreds were better behaved. The one thing about a purebred is that you get an idea of their temperment, activity, and behavior ahead of time. At one time I was looking into adopting a greyhound myself but I suddenly had to take up roots and move so it never came to fruition. Personally, if I could ensure that it would get enough attention and exercise I would get my a labrador retreiver. They are such fantastic dogs.

Golden retriever? Those are great dogs.

Honestly I'd get a mixed mutt from the shelter. Theres so many dogs there and so many different shelters that I'm sure you could find a dog that you want.

Get a Basset Hound. You will have to expend an inordinate amount of energy to get that dog to move to do anything. Mellow enough?

If you want a pure bred you can usually find one at shelters if you wait long enough and keep looking, but the real easy way to find one is to get in contact with a breed rescue.

Standard poodles seem really fruity but really they are like dobermans with curly coats.
