dog people, i got a question

i have never owned a dog, so dont know how people act around their dogs normall, my 2 roommates, my friend and his g/f have a dog and im cool with it, but what kinda weirds me out is after they finish their meal, a lot of times things like pasta, they put the bowl/plate and utinsels on the ground and the dog comes and licks it clean.

its starting to get to me, i mentioned how its probably not the most sanitary thing (the dog is known to eat a lot of sh*t)...but they kinda laughed it off, saying i was hanging out with my g/f too much (shes a clean freak)

dunno if i should make a big deal about it or not

usually then its just put into the dishwasher, but we have a crappy dishwasher that doesnt get things all that clean

It's not unusual. Many people (me included) do that.

The dishwasher gets the dishes nice and clean for the next human to use them.

No problem at all with it. Dishwasher really shouldn't be used for cleaning as much as sanitizing/sterilizing.

<--- Dog owner.

I can't stand that! Actually, what I can't stand is the dog begging when I am trying to eat. And letting the dog lick your plate only encourages said behavior.

We teach our dogs not to beg, when we are eating, but when we finish we put the leftover in their own bowl.

i would like that better, if they put it in her bowl, but no way i could get them to do that

I saw dog people in the title and wondered:

1.) What are dog people
2.) Can they use a computer, like maybe they have paws for hands or something

Then a few seconds later I realized it meant "people who know about dogs."

That's completely different than setting your plate down for the dog to lick.

Btw, my problem with the OP's concern has nothing to do with cleanliness.

Me too but that's the best way to spoil a dog. If you can avoid it by all means do. I'm weak.

Absolutely. THey are simply teaching the dog that not only is it okay to beg for food, but encouraging it. Giving the dog an appropriate amount of scraps is fine, but they should be given to the dog in its regular dish, preferably after exhibiting good behavior.

THe dog begging might be acceptable when those who live in the house are home, but is it something they would want the dog to do around guests? The dog doesnt know the difference and shouldnt be expected to.

yeah they give in to the dog very easily

when they are around the dog barks like crazy knowing it will get attention

When I am the only one in the apartment its the quitest dog ever, it will come sit next to me and i will pet it, but won't bark because it knows that if it barks I will not be happy.

I will feed the dog scraps or something when its good, but usually its just like a pretzel or something that doesnt require a plate

I agree....
I do not have a dog anymore, but do have a houseful of cats.. they have their bowls, and we have ours. And they are not allowed to beg, or even get within arms distance to us when we are eating. Once it starts, it never stops.

That's a myth. Dogs have higher concentrations of bacteria in their mouths than humans. Have you smelled dog breath recently??

Hell I always do that.

Most dogs aren't really good for MUCH, but they make GREAT garbage disposals and when they are done, you don't have to pre clean the dishes before you stick them in the dishwasher!

EDIT: And Brutus doesn't beg either!

My dogs are really good. They don't beg during dinner, but once they "sense" that dinner is over (and they always sense correctly), one will sing and the other will put his head on your lap. And yeah, we have two dogs, one is good at getting the "real objects" off the plate, while the other one will lick the plate spotless.

Yep, my dogs are good like that too. They lick a plate so clean that we joke it doesn't even need to be put in the dishwasher but back in the cabinet.

They know that begging doesn't pay and that patient doggies get some leftovers(chicken is the best according to them! )
