kind of sweet, but then you realize the reason why the dog is there is because of the scent.

And? If the dog had no loyalty to his/her owner, he/she wouldn't be waiting at her grave.

Another example of why dog is man's best friend.

Dogs are awesome like that. So sad too.

I wonder how long the dog will ultimately stay there. It's obviously ignoring certain instincts already, if it hasn't left the site for two days. But I wonder if it will let itself perish, or if at the last minute if it will move on and try to find a life after the one it knew with its owner.

Dogs can be like that - after the passing of their owner, they may ignore everything else to stay by their owner after death.
The dog isn't sitting there only because it smells the scent of the owner. A dog knows when the master is actually dead, just like they will often know when the master is seriously ill.

Poor mutt, it was so attached to its master that it will ignore its own health and wellbeing to stay beside the body of its master.
We don't really know exactly why they will sometimes do this, but its basically one of two reasons: either it wants to protect the body, or it doesn't care to do anything else except serve the master and feels no purpose to go on with life without its master.

Regardless, that's the ultimate reward of the man and dog bond. I will always have a dog, and will always give a dog as much as I can because they give so much in return.

One of the most depressing episodes of Futurama.

agree, they are indeed man's best friend. but do they know the concept of life and death? does the dog think the owner will return?

I know they know concept of life and death.

I've had two of my dogs pass away. When one was being put to sleep, my two other dogs hovered right over her but once she passed away, they walked away.

When my other dog passed away, my other dog kept on nudging her head and licking it but eventually stopped.

Both times, my other dogs didn't eat the next day and were quiet.

They may or may not "understand" death to self, but they most surely understand death and the wellbeing of others. They are a social creature and will go to great lengths for any creature they accept as pack/friend.
They can recognize risks and illness and can act in a way that will help their pack/friends stay alive or in general avoid harm. They will also put themselves in harms way for the wellbeing of pack/friends. But, depending on the strength of the bond/loyalty, they may or may not keep themselves in a situation of personal risk if they recognize the death of a friend.

There are strong biochemical actions in the body that crank out a very recognizable smell for any creature that can recognize said smell. Fear, stress, illness, death, they are part of the story of a creature's smell. We humans happen to have a very weak sense of smell, except for rare occasions or the rare individual, we basically cannot smell the difference on the people around us, let alone on other creatures. Dogs, they definitely can smell the difference. They act on those smells.

If it was a cat it would have left the moment the lady wasn't around to feed it. You know it's true.

Does anyone have that YouTube video of two dogs crossing a road, one gets hit/killed and the other dog is seen trying to pull the dead dog to safety?
