It's in stores - go get some of that sweet sweet nectar of the gods.

Shit, mixing up my folklore - food of the gods. Sorry about that.

Local large-stock liquor store just received their shipment of Theobroma. This year's brew is just as good as I remember it two years ago (missed it last summer).

750ml bottle (1pint and 9ish ounces) of 9% ABV divine deliciousness.

So it's based off a recipe that's more than 3,000 years old? That sounds intriguing; I'll have to see if the local beer marts have any in stock.

Geez, I came in here expecting a thread about some kind of bizarre parasitic organism.

Hmmm, I've never tried this. I thought I had tried everything from Dogfish Head.

I thought that was Midas Touch. Theobroma is another ancient brew that they do?

Midas Touch is based off of residue from drinking vessels in Midas' tomb. Theobroma is from a chemical analysis of pottery fragments from the ancient Aztecs in Honduras. So apparently they're both ancient recipes, just from different areas of the planet.

Incidentally I grabbed those descriptions off ratebeer, I'm assuming they're accurate.

-EDIT- Wait, isn't King Midas just a myth? How does he have a tomb? Dogfish Head are messing with my head...

Some people have said it tastes somewhat similar to Midas Touch - but ancient-origins brews might just be somewhat similar.

Theobroma is supposed to be based off the ingredients of a Mayan/Aztek beer - one that most certainly would have been a fairly bitter drink, though with a hint of sweetness. Ancient chocolates prized the pureness of cacao and didn't make it all milky and loaded with sugar (yuck).

Theobroma has a taste of sweetness from the honey, but it is nicely balanced with the chile, annatto, and cacao. It has a very earthy, spicy background, and every now and then you are reminded that it definitely has chile in there somewhere.

Some people complain the chocolate flavor is barely there - but unlike other chocolate brews, this isn't meant to taste like modern-day chocolate. It's meant to cherish the biting characteristic of pure cacao - something ancient civilizations are known to have done.
If you are familiar with very dark chocolate (80% cacao), you will notice a mild and bitter chocolate flavor in the aftertaste. At least, that's how I experience this brew.

Aw. They shoulda had this a week ago.
I dropped $50 on a variety of different beers, I hadn't had before, over a week ago. But I wasn't planning to be drinking again for a while. Or at least until they release Punkin' Ale next month. If they still have Theo, I'll check that out too.
