Wendy's burgers just have this weird oily taste to them. I don't know how to describe it. Their chicken sandwiches are pretty good though. This thread makes me want to go to Hardees, but it's about 15 minutes each way.

I don't agree with the Wendy's thing but I know what you mean, and you taste it so it's a good reason for you not to like them.

I made a list once here of the fast food places close to me, and I think I stopped at about over twenty.

Plenty of choices. Though our Church's Chiccken just went out of business.

Replaced by something called 'Fire Wok' with the worst burger ever, threw it away.

Not from what I've seen in my lifetime.

Don't even get me started on free samples! *cough*Costco*cough*. People are like savages when it comes to food.

Costco and Sam's Club's free samples are  (I consider their food products "quality"). I'm talking about fast food joints like McDonald's...more and more, ppl (adults, anyway) are gravitating towards better tasting burger restaurants like Five Guys or even chains like Chili's or Red Robin.

I might go with 'decent'. About every six months I get one, just had one this week. Bleh.

We agree on the main thing, for a burger that's 'decent', it's overrated as 'oh my gosh I loveeeeeeee In n Out it's amazing' a lot.

Since Hardees and Carl's Jr. are about the same, ya, we agree they're better.

You rank In n Out higher than I do. Haven't had Krystal so can't rank them. I rank Wendy's higher than you - I put Sonic in that bad spot.

Then there are the 'casual restaurant' burgers that are better than any of these pretty much, Chili's and Red Robin type burgers.

of the big three national chains - wendys - burger king - mcdonalds the wendys burgers are the best.

in n out is good just overhyped. you gotta get a double though. a single patty is too small.

shake shack, while also super hyped, is indeed worth the hype. sonic sucks. i went to red robin once, was not impressed, gotta try it again.

Sounds like we agree a lot. Red Robin isn't great, just better than the fast food. I'd recommend Chili's over them.

I haven't had Applebee's in years, so can't comment on those, but suspect they're in the same 'typical' casual restaraunt quality.

A lot of independent diners have better burgers than the chains.

I could name about twenty in the bay area and there are more.

We even have some fancy 'burger bar' with a price range of about $15 to $75 in San Francisco, but I wasn't that impressed with the taste.

Another San Francisco place has a burger people RAVE about that's some 'all natural' burger, but again, the taste just wasn't there for me.

The one I linked the pictures of - that's a good one.

that one looks delicious.

whenever i travel i do try a burger at the regions fast food chains that we don't have in jersey. so i've tried carls jr, jack in the box, whataburger. i agree, carl's jr is good too. jack in the box not really. whataburger i think was ok. good meaty taste but i don't think i was craving it. smashburger was not good the first time, decent the second time - also need to get a double there. fatburger, i think by default there is too much stuff on their burgers if i remember right but if i get it the way i like, it's better than wendys.

have you tried shake shack?

also, just in case you haven't seen it, the A Hamburger Today blog is the best. they break down the science and technique of making the best burgers.

No, I haven't tried Shake Shack or Whataburger. It's been over a decade for Backyard Burgers. I think Del Taco is good - I've been meaning to get back there.

I wouldn't buy more stuff because you have a dollar menu: I'd just buy a bunch more different things.

I LOVE the Wendy's cheapo menu and use it instead of ordering off their combo menus all the time. Occasionally, I might get a regular combo and tack on one thing from their value menu.

actually, I think the dollar menu fails because you cant even sell dog food for $1 and be profitable. I bet the $1 menu is just advertising, and it didn't make people buy other things.

I was a manager of a chicken express(mainly a franchise in Texaa) in the mid 2000s. The location I worked at grossed $5500-$9000 a day. The $4900 a day sounds low for a properly run McDonald's. I guess since its average they have a lot of bad locations or mismanaged locations.

Have you seen an In N Out burger, it does look like that.

Yes I have and no they don't always look like that. Maybe its the one by our office in CA but most of the time the cheese is not melted on the burger and the burger is waaaaaaaaaay over charred

my argument though was that if mcd's sold real food they would make more money, and I can see why that doesn't make sense. their entire business model is based on pushing as much product as they can for the lowest margins possible in order to stay competitive.

Well, with a profit of over $1Bn ($1.26 profit per share and 1Bn outstnading shares) I am not sure they'd be re-thinking their entire company model with drastic changes in food - esp considering profit was up this quarter. Again - how they are faring remains to be seen when BKW releases their financials

I think the reason why McDonald's Dollar Menu is failing to boost sales now is same reason Walmart seems to be saying it's core customer is stressed, stretched, and has very limited extra disposable income.

Economic recovery has been very bi-furcated, and spike in gasoline prices a month ago, plus expiration of payroll tax holiday, have made many consumers very cautious with discretionary dollars they have.

Costco shopper, or even more likely very upbrand luxury item sellers or auto maker like BMW are probably seeing record sales like it's 1999 all over again.

According to this average sales of a McD's runs $2.4m annually or about $6500 a day

http://www.franchisefoundations.com/mcdonaldsfranchise.html

Other sites have it in the same ball park with the average owner profit at about $240k a year. Not bad when you consider how many freaking locations they have...

$4900 is after food and paper costs. Not counting those, they're getting about $7400.

Wrong. I'm not saying In n Out isn't a little better than the $1 McDonald's burger.

For a good fast food burger, my recollection is go to Backyard Burgers.

I have one of the best burger places in the country near me, so that's useful.

Far better than In n Out are Carl's Jr., if you need fast food; even Wendy's is better.

The worst major chain burger though is Sonic's.

You do have no taste! Sonic and In N Out make good burgers! But the best place around here not including Red Robin is Smash burger.

In n Out is ok, Sonic is bad.

Not everyone has the same opinion.

Now, Sonic has great tater tots, and In n Out has nice shakes.

Or do you disagree with that too?

I prefer culvers over in n out. Five guys too but the price point definitely favors in n out over five guys.

This thread is overdue for someone to say non-chain restaurant burgers using fresh ground beef and home baked rolls >> any chain.

Oh, and I know you guys grew up with the stuff, so don't know any better, but those processed American "cheese" slices really don't deserve to be called cheese.

But now this thread has made me hungry for a real burger - maybe I'll go out for dinner tonight to one of the many places around that serve them. Thank God my neck of the woods hasn't been overrun by pseudo-food.

McDonald's fails at more than just the dollar menu.

^This
I find very few McD's items worth even a dollar.(With the exception of their Fries.)
One exception is the Bacon, Egg, & Cheese bagel.

I used to enjoy a Big Mac a couple times a year, but after the last one ~6 months ago, I don't think I will ever eat another.
